Mervyns starts going-out-of-business sale
Bankrupt retailer Mervyns announced Thursday that it would immediately begin a chain-wide going-out-of-business sale. The sale is intended to liquidate inventory valued at $900 million across the 59-year-old company’s remaining 149 stores. Mervyns has two locations in Bakersfield: one at 4450 California Ave., and another at the East Hills Mall.

Do I understand this right..that ALL Mervyns stores are closing? This is bad news. I lost the great sales at Robinson May when they closed and now will lose the great sales at Mervyns. Criminy. posted by

This makes me sad. I worked at Mervyns from 1967 to 1971 and it entirely financed my college education. Boy, you can't work part-time in a retail store and have that happen anymore. I knew Mervyn Morris, the founder of Mervyns. He was there when we opened the Princeton Plaza store (the 5th Mervyn's store after Napa, San Lorenzo, Fremont -- the one I began in -- and east San Jose). He told the assembed employees, "I am Mervyn Morris, but you are Mervyns. How you treat people will be how people know Mervyns." My first credit card ever was for Mervyns. I still have it. I dated four women I met at Mervyns (including my first fiance) and I remain good friends with all of them. It was actually sad when Mervyns went corporate a couple decades ago. Still it continued the tradition of offering good merchandise at a reasonable price. So I will miss the stores. It makes me wonder about the future of retailing as Mervyns follows a list of other department stores who went out of business or are in trouble.

We were shopping in Mervyn's at East Hills yesterday. The prices were no lower than one of their regular sale events. But #2 son needed nicer black pants for a school field trip and we paid $21.99 for Cambridge Classics twill regular price was $28.00. We were told that all sales are final and that only exchanges for a differant size would be allowed on purchases through Nov. 14th. After that there are NO exchanges at all. The store is supposedly scheduled to close on Dec. 1st. I had to say no to buying other items yesterday and told the boys we would come back later after the bigger discounts kick in.
