Another thing--- 5 Books you could not live without and
This one especially :  gear costing no more than $500 retail and weighing no more than 50 pounds that would most enhance your chance of survival (includes those Books of course)......

As far as the $500 in equipment iis concerned:..

The 500 dollar limit precludes any fancy firearms but given that,

A simple but strudy knife. I would probably go with a Gerber LMF, available for less than 60 dollars.

100 feet of parachute suspension line... about 13 dollars.

A Zippo lighter and a couple of cans of fluid... 20 dollars.

A poncho... 10 dollars.

A multitool, probably a Gerber...about 40 dollars.

An H2OProof Boonie Cap... 15 dollars.

That puts us at under 160 dollars.

A couple of boxes of Trioxane tabs... 13 dollars for 108 tabs, which should give us about 320 burns.

A surplus ruck... you can get a used CPF 90 for about 30 dollars.

That puts us at 203 dollars.

A water filter... You can get an MSR Sweetwater for about 55 dollars.

Surplus canteens... You can get 4 for under 20 dollars.

First aid kit... You can get a military kit in a hard case for 15 dollars.

Flashlight... Lightwave AA flashlight. It will give you about 14 days of continuous on time with 3 AA batteries... 25 dollars.

A couple of extra sets of batteries... 6 dollars.

That takes us up to 304 dollars.

Machete... You can get a Cold Steel Panga for less than 9 dollars.

Compass... Nothing fancy, a Silva Trekker would be fine... 18 dollars.

A note pad and a couple of mechanical pencils... 10 dollars.

Oh, and a Fox 40 whistle... 6 dollars.

Assuming basic clothing, shirt, pants, boots are provided. That should be enough to make me reasonably comfortable for quite a while.

I might throw a couple of packs of Jerky and some multivitamins in there to get me by until I got the lay of the land... 20 dollars.

That brings me in at less than 370 dollars.

Books... FM 21-76 would be good.

Peoples later.

We haven't been close (to put it nicely). I may just go down and visit. You never know what brings people together.

Thx for asking Baylee

Oh, and a magnesium sparker fire starter as a backup but a Trioxane bar to use to start your tinder….. Hexamine is actually better than Trioxane. They burn about the same, but Hexamine doesn't put out the obnoxious fumes Trioxane does. You need to make sure you use them in a ventilated area or it is like burning CS. Hexamine is also more available commercially. that is the fuel that comes with Esbit Stoves. The tabs are also smaller and usually don't have to be broken to use. They burn cleaner, too.

You don't have to break Trioxane tabs into thirds, but it is wasteful most of the time to use a whole tab on something. It takes about third of a tab to boil a canteen cup of water.

I really just specified Trioxane because it burns under just about any conditions.

Toss in a $125.00 Pur Survivor 06-LL system and turn sea water into drinking water..the boyscout manual would be a good book, and a cache of spices to make what ever you found to eat taste better. I'd pick a thinker( day to day ops), a dreamer( invention), a "brute"( I mean that in the best possible way),a literate being(for storytelling  and history collector) and a leader. And not rf. lol

Wait, wait, wait, ...hold on.  If you had a sat phone you wouldn't be abandoned.  Silly gooses.

I'm still trying to figure out who I'd want there with me but it's hard to make a decision with so many good ones to choose from.  Tools I'd want would be a hammer, pliers, crescent wrench, and duct tape.  (my standard tool kit.)  With those I can conquer the island.  Well, maybe a saw too.  (This place DOES have trees doesn't it?)

spam code whoohoooo  HB LAP  Now if I can just figure out who HB is.  ;-)

I am the one who posted the cost of the wrong phone

not OB

and TomW may well be right about some kind of "deal" on a ST rental but I don't think so. The deposit may be partially refundable but I haven't seen many deals like that so its not done and done TomW.

Unless you post a better deal

OB's point was clever but Oehghus is paying attn.

posted by TomW on Oct 25, 2007 at 07:18 AM
Nancy, I think I'd like you on the team as well.  I'd take gaffers' tape over duct tape since it holds up better outside.  I'd pass on the crescent wrench since there wouldn't be that many bolts to contend with.
posted by ChicoEsquela on Oct 25, 2007 at 07:26 AM

Gorilla Duct tape even better!

and its not a crescent wrench (it could come from other than Crescent Tool Co.)

its an adjustable end wrench

oh well, you don't want it anyway

good call?

posted by ChicoEsquela on Oct 25, 2007 at 07:30 AM
OK Tom. The handle comes off your saw. Its bolted on. Haha
posted by TomW on Oct 25, 2007 at 07:48 AM
Chico, if that was the case, you'd need two.  As for a crescent wrench, gimme a break.  I guess it's not a sawzall or a bandaid or a kleenex or a makita or channellocks or on and on and on.
posted by ChicoEsquela on Oct 25, 2007 at 07:52 AM

no TomW

one side of the bolt (its a carriage bolt) is just round but slotted into the wooden orifice. so all you need do is pull it into slot and crank asway. Of course the hole is recessed so you'd need to use Nancy's needlenose (hey I like that) to get into the recessed to get a purchase on the nut)

ha! take it easy there "handy man"

I'm old fashioned! ha!

They got us oenghus!

posted by ChicoEsquela on Oct 25, 2007 at 08:11 AM

Good luck getting one of their phones though TomW

They have 10. They are all out. Unless you're a Fire or Police Dept and assoc with the current fires, you'll be waiting for one quite a while. Good deal though

They are in Concord, CA

Iradium (satellite co.)

Quantum  Star (Mind Logic, etc.)

Some ex-hippy handles their orders. Sounds like an FM guy whojust gargled massive quantities of peanut butter

mayhaps oenghus was right after all?

posted by TomW on Oct 25, 2007 at 08:30 AM
I guess so, Chico.  You are both right.  I'm sure that there is no way to get it done.
posted by NancyII on Oct 25, 2007 at 08:31 AM

Ah but I didn't specify needlenose pliers did I.  Although a good idea, I'd like standard pliers as well.  Better for opening those bottles with messages inside.

Chico..As for Crescent brand name...be careful the next time you order a Coke or Pepsi and make sure you just say "cola."

I could say slip joint off set pliers instead of channel locks and they would be would be good to have too.

Tom..I probably wouldn't find any nuts or bolts but then...look what they did on Gilligans Island.  Ya never know.

I'll look into the different kinds of tape...I do know that the duct tape I used to hold my insulated lunch bag together didn't work very well..it keeps coming loose and flapping.  (Notice I never say Duck Tape since that's a brand name..just the tape you use to seal ducts together.)

;-p

(edited for content and semantics)

posted by ChicoEsquela on Oct 25, 2007 at 08:39 AM

channel locks essa!

but when I order a "cola" I use Coke or Pepsi because thats precisely what I want...... a Coke or a Pepsi

I order a "cola" and I might get a "sam's Special" (Walmart crapola my wife drinks) ha!

Its called "Gorilla Tape"

has pic of king kong on it. Its twice the fabric of duct tape, easier to get (if not stronger) than "gaffer's or grip's tape!

Cabela's etc, has it

(fixed my shootin' stroke weldin' glasses wiff it. Now I look like Joe Nerd or one of the Slapshot guys -- good movie BTW -- esp if you like Canucks) of course I only wear 'em shootin' or weldin' (unless I'm in Weldon)

Its strong though

posted by NancyII on Oct 25, 2007 at 08:55 AM

Cabelas?  Where would that be?

As far as tools go..I'm a tool time kinda gal.  One Christmas my kids asked what I wanted for presents and I told them a cordless screwdriver.  Shoulda asked for a cordless drill since they got me what I asked for.

Even so..I'm not a perfectionist with the names of much of anyhting.  I'm as likely to ask for a whatchamacallit or a thingamajig or one of them thar wrench thingys about that size and I am to ask for  that 9/16 open end wrench.

I'm done..some of us have to work around here.  :-)
