Kerry Vows to Disprove Swift Boat Claims

BOSTON (AP) — Sen. John Kerry, whose 2004 presidential campaign was torpedoed by critics of his Vietnam War record, said Friday he has personally accepted a Texas oilman's offer to pay $1 million to anyone who can disprove even a single charge of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

In a letter to T. Boone Pickens, the Massachusetts Democrat wrote: "While I am prepared to show they lied on allegation after allegation, you have generously offered to pay one million dollars for just one thing that can be proven false. I am prepared to prove the lie beyond any reasonable doubt."

Kerry, a Navy veteran and former prosecutor, said he was willing to present his case directly to Pickens, who provided $3 million to bankroll the group during Kerry's race against President Bush.

Kerry said he would donate any proceeds to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

The senator said Pickens issued the challenge Nov. 6 in Washington, while serving as chairman of a 40th anniversary gala for American Spectator magazine.

In the letter, Kerry offered to travel to Dallas to meet with Pickens in a public forum or to invite him to come to Massachusetts. He suggested the two could visit the Paralyzed Veterans of America in Norwood to see firsthand how Pickens' money could be used to help veterans. A copy of the letter was provided to The Associated Press.

Pickens spokesman Jay Rosser asked to review the letter before commenting.

First in the book "Unfit for Command," and then in a series of television commercials, Kerry's critics challenged the circumstances for his military awards, accused him of doctoring reports and argued he never traveled into Cambodia as claimed.

While fellow veterans and reporters disproved many of the group's claims at the time, Kerry refused to air ads responding to the criticism. His own response was muted for fear of legitimizing his critics' attacks. The senator conceded after losing to Bush that his lackluster response likely cost him the election.

Ever since, Kerry has worked to lay the criticisms to rest.

In May 2005, he began allowing reporters access to his full Navy personnel and medical records — something he refused to do during the campaign.

Those records mostly duplicated documents Kerry released during the 2004 campaign. In addition, they included numerous commendations from commanders who criticized Kerry's service during the presidential race.

That disclosure renewed questions about why Kerry did not respond more forcefully with control over the White House at stake.

Kerry decided against launching a second bid for president, but vowed to defend his record and prevent other candidates from being "Swift-boated."

In his letter to Pickens, the senator challenged the billionaire's honor.

"I trust that you are a man of your word, having made a very public challenge at a major Washington dinner, and look forward to taking you up on this challenge," Kerry wrote.

Getting a commendation by commanders and then having them refute their own record in such a timely manner must be coincidence......or.....maybe that would call into question THEIR integrity.

You gotta give it to Karl Rove though, only he could turn a war hero into a opportunist, and turn a guy who wouldn't even report to the deadly airspace called Alabama a hero.

Pickens isn't going to pay up anyway, he already gave all he's going to give to the Swiftboaters.

Boone is a conservative, he'll find a way to weasel out of the challenge.

We'll see TSM.

A flesh wound in anterior brachialias due to shrapnel (copper jacket from M-79 Blooper round) from firing into escarpment and richochet coming back on you. Searching out (by boat) in Nha Trang Field Hosp a Hosp Tech who would pull out what most of us would pull out with index and and thumb with tweezers the shard of copper and then he insisted on on a rept filed for hiher ups to approve for PHM. Come on. Most of us just let those things happen (in fact kinda embarrassed), were they to. Not JFKerry. He made damn sure they happened so with 3 you get eggroll == go home.

Shooting a young boy in the back? And, as I've been acused of many times on here, I'd stand up for any Vet who did what he felt he needed to do. Very little judement from here. Unless its done for...........

Political enrichment in future.

And thats what we have here. OK guys, call Bush a Draft Dodger (notice you never call the real one Clinton one but OK) but at least he didn't run on his war record. Do a Gomer Pyle salute at DNC (Bush would have at RNC but didn't).

This guy had his eye on the prize from day one. He spent first "tour" off the coast in Navy vessel where the closest he got was when he said B-52's "bombed" overhead. Pfffffft............ They were clear over in Laos when bombing. We could hear them at Bu Prang etc. but not Kerry.

He derserves what he gets from this.................

He must have bought off some more 50 cal gunners ala his one supporter or the "green beret" he "saved" from the drink who came to his defense (right place at right CS time I expect)

Sheeshe people!

And in case your wondering why Nha Trang, everyone knew thats where SOG, etc. worked out of and it was a really short trip to come out of Delta in PBR and go around "horn" and up coast to inlet at Cam Rahn to get to Nha Trang. Didi Mau.

Written by an anti-war type on Vietnam who interviewed various drafted grunts:  The G.I. feels culturally and physically superior to the Vietnamese, yet they are being killed or wounded by some of these people.  Since the enemy does not fight out in the open but plants mines and booby traps, fires rockets or mortar rounds into the base camps, and usually does most of his fighting under the cover of darkness, the G.I. is frustrated at not being able to see or distinguish his enemy.  Since the enemy is all around him and not isolated to a certain area of the country with marked lines of battle, the G.I. is always in danger of his life, which is quite a frustrating thing to have on one's mind.  Since he cannot easily strike out at the enemy to rid himself of this frustration, the G.I. strikes out at the closest Vietnamese civilians, which are the closest thing to the enemy that is readily available.

Do you think this is why John Kerry shot that little boy in the back with his 16?

I could have accepted this. To get another phony PH? I cannot.

To be in the right place at the right time to pull the courageous SF guy out of Mekong (which he knew op would be there on PBRs) for a Silver Star just piles on.

The guy knows at this point they can't cannot prove a negative and he doesn't have to prove a positive...................

Kerry is just a third rate opportunist . If you look at the things he has said and done the only conclusion a rational person could come to is that the man is not very bright.  I predict that Pickens $$ is safe.

Nah, anybody that has more than two brain cells to rub together knows that Bush on his worst day is five times better than nitwit kerry could ever hope to be on his best day.

I believe most of the swift boaters stories, I feel almost the same about Gore as I do Kerry, both are pontificating, boring blowhards.  I have known some like Kerry, they are able to find the media in any situation and if it's not there they will some how make it appear, always for their egotistic overblown view of themselves.

Gee, between Charlie and anglo1 I can't wedge much common sense in.........

They just kinda said it all

Sometimes I wonder how Libs can listen to someone so pedantic and ponitificating as Gore who sounds like he is talking to 5th graders........ then I realize........

He is.............

So shall we assume, Charlie, that you haven't figured that out?

posted by ChicoEsquela on Nov 17, 2007 at 04:28 PM

Charlie not only figured it out

He answered it. What part don't you get esse? Its like I said on other thread, some of you set up strawmen and turn direct answers to questions into another question. We are all catching on to your Modus Operendi esse.

Done and done..............

Verdad?

Hi gentlemen! Lets face it all politicians probably do not have your best interest at heart and if they did it gets wrenched out of them by one session in office.  In the end it is just you who spends your life in your own head and soul...if you can sleep at night ,you have done good! We can hardly judge each other, let alone someone we have never really known. We can judge the economy, the policy but the personal integrity of every human is a much harder thing to discern.
