Will Obama Pick Richardson To Get Hispanic Vote?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008... Why else would Richardson eschew his long-time friends the Clintons and their overtures? He has always been a political opportunist of the first order. He tried to institute Health Care for employers with more than 4 employees and New Mexicans are not happy with him about now. I think he sees Obama as the eventual winner and is wrangling for the job he really wants with a promise to deliver the significant Hispanic vote that Obama needs! 20 comments from 9 users

If you know much about Richardson, you know he is one of those Washington Bureaucrats who moves in and out of DC circles and jobs like you would change your socks. I think he'd just as soon leave NM for the environs of real power and he's sees Obama as his chance to do so! posted by

A very knowledgeable friend from NM sent me this: Richardson's desperate to get out of New Mexico. He tried to shove universal healthcare through the legislature (Democrat controlled) last year and failed when it was found that the policy research firm he hired drastically underestimated the costs. Richardson wanted to make employers responsible for reporting to the state the insurance status of every employee. Every business with four or more employees would be responsible for providing health insurance and all businesses would be required to pay into a fund for state subsidized insurance for the unemployed. Doctors would be required by law to only provide services approved by insurance companies. The legislature realized this would chase doctors (already in short supply) out of the state and be a huge burden on small businesses so they kicked it to the curb. So what is Richardson doing? He's going to call for a special session to try to ram it through the legislature again. Makes you go hmmmmmmmm.................... posted by

I don't think there is that much of a Hispanic vote in the few remaining primary states is there? I think he needed the money for his increasing Grecian Formula costs, what with the new beard and all. And Obama, being a Chicago pol, was more than willing to pony up. posted by

I'm talking about the general Obama will be nominee He has turned off HIspanics especially of late with Wright and his comments about his own grand mother. Hispanics don't like that. Richardson will give Obama supposed military and enery policy gravitas as well. It will interesting to see if I am wright! posted by

The nice thing about Richardson for Obama is that he helps to strengthen some of Obama's weak spots. He has some foreign policy experience which is nice and he's also a bit more moderate than Obama (gun rights come to mind). posted by

For McCain, I can tell you who "wants" it. If McCain breaks wind, he's gonna mess up Lindsay Graham's hair. posted by

Lindsay is a smart guy (I liked him when he was the first one to bring up what Clinton would have done had there been no blue dress with DNA) but I don't think McCain will choose him. I have lately been wondering about Lieberman. Of course Pawlenty has been talked about a lot as well as the Southern bunch, the Governors Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Mark Sanford of South Carolina, or Charlie Crist of Florida. All have a good conservative base and can pull in the southern vote. Don't think he needs them though. I have always touted Michael Steele (always liked him) or J.C. Watts (always liked him too). But that might look to clever by half to pick an African American. Still like them though, they just happen to be black. I could see Lindsay more as Atty General though. Liebermn may not want to run again as a veep, especially as a Republican. He may well be PO'd as some of the Dems for the way they treated him but not THAT PO'd! I lean toward Pawlenty as he has hinted about him of late and McCain is still trying to solidify his conservative base, I think he sees that as crucial, more so than even the South (he should get that anyway). It will be interesting. I just hope he doesn't pull a 41 and choose a guy like Quayle. I met him once in Riz, and he is a class A jerk IMO! We shall see..................... posted by

Peggy Noonan on MTP today likened Richardson to Rod Steiger in Dr. Zhivago! Maybe in more ways than one............... posted by

That is a possibility in my estimation Sage. I just don't know if Lieberman would want to go through all that again. If he lost then what? posted by

Susan Estrich pretty much called Richardson an hypocritical opportunist this morning on Fox:

I don't think he does anything for the hispanic vote. He does not have a hispanic surname most of the hispanics I know, at least the hardcore La Raza types, wouldn't consider him an hermano. posted by

He has plenty of time to break out the Gillette Obama may well not choose him, but Richardson doesn't know that. He is making his play, offering his foreign policy cred, something he thinks Obama needs. He may well want another post like SecDef or State or Energy as a fall back in any case. Obama needs to shore up the Hispanic vote, Richardson may not be the person to do it, however.
