That picture looks really old (probably from the 70s or early 80s). There are young people who stand for the National Anthem but some just don't know the protocol. It's not purely out of disrespect. We're in a different generation and they have to learn it from somewhere (i.e. prior generations). posted by

I think they "learned" it from their Gen X Momma's and Daddy's jf. Not sure the time frame of pic is operative however. I think today it would be the same. BTW, since we are picking at pic, did you notice they are all white? ;=)

I think you might be right about the Gen. X "learning", Chico. What does the white comment mean? Are you saying non-white people don't attend such events or that whites can fall under all ends of the patriotic-nonpatriotic spectrum? posted by

Chico ..a racist? Surely you jest. He's one of the least racist here in my thinking. Once again, people are so reactionary when White, Black, or Mexican is used in a sentence. Oh..I think I brought that up on a previous blog. It's ok to say "white group" or "Mexican group" or "______ group. Really it is. It doesn't make you a racist. posted by

The question is not whether Obama is white enough to be president. It's whether America is confident enough to question a black presidents's capabilities without fear of the black community calling it racist. posted by

No, Audrey, the question is whether about half the old-time Democratic voters will get past the fact that their candidate came in second in the race, and vote for the better of the two remaining choices come November. Because if they don't, I assure you that the second-place candidate will not be in the running come 2012. . And I made that statement without reference to color or gender. Rest assured that the Republicans won't. posted by

RF I honestly don't believe the Republicans wll be the only ones who will ask if racism will be blamed when criticisms about decisions are made. This election will be unprecedented and I don't believe that people are that sure of their feelings in this matter. I also don't believe anyone can predict with any accuracy what the reactions will be. We've never had to cross this bridge before any more than we would have had to cross the gender bridge. posted by

It just shows that Democrats are still too idealistic, too demanding of perfection, to be able to get along even with one another. They are their own election spoilers, their own worst enemies. We Republicans have our own idealistic, perfection-demanding wing, but they have not yet busted our party into incompatible halves. But that may be coming. posted by

True that RF..we ARE a nation of bridge crossers but my point is that we haven't had to cross THAT bridge yet and only time will tell if we're ready or not. I think the last serious bridge we had to cross was with JFK and the fear that the Pope would govern the USA through the Kennedy's. I'll repeat as often as necessary that I don't care what color the candidate is I'll vote for the one whose beliefs most closely reflect my own. posted by
