10th of February - Anonymous takes on the Cult of Scientology
By now you may of heard about the ongoing battle between the Cult of Scientology and a group which calls itself Anonymous. In case you haven't here is a little background... A couple of weeks ago a video was posted on YouTube of Tom Cruise looking insane and muttering barely comprehensible drivel about the supposed benefits of Scientology. He said some pretty outrageous and hilarious things like: "Being a Scientologist, when you drive past an accident, it’s not like anyone else. As you drive past, you know you have to do something about it, because you know you’re the only one that can really help..." And... "We are the authorities in getting people off drugs. We are the authorities on the mind. We are the authorities on improving conditions. Criminals, we can rehabilitate criminals. Way to happiness, we can bring peace and unite cultures.." Oh..and this one... "And I won’t hesitate to put ethics in someone else" You can watch the full video in all its insane glory here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=... Well...the Cult responded like it always does...it tried to strong-arm YouTube to take the video down by unleashing its attorneys on the site. This was a bit too much for Anonymous who responded with a very provocative call to arms video which you can see here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=... It should be noted that Anonymous isn't the monolithic organization of dangerous hackers that some sources claim. Its a loose affiliation of like minded individuals from all walks of life. The video was followed by a series of Internet assaults which effectively shut down Scientology websites for awhile. Pretty funny in light of the Cult's well documented history of suppressing any criticism of itself. What's not funny is the many lives that the Cult has destroyed through its draconian tactics of harassment. The Cult will attempt to sue, stalk, harass and threaten anybody they perceive as a threat...and they have been doing it for a long time. You can read about it here: http://www.lermanet.com/sci... They read about the many people who have died as a result of the Cult's dangerous teachings. People who needed medications but were told that Psychiatric treatment was Evil. People who were kept against their will...horror story after horror story. You can read their stories here: They read all of these things and wanted to make a difference. They saw how the Cult fraudulently hides behind the banner of a Religion, when, in reality, it is a Corporation making obscene amounts of money by charging outrageous sums for its snake-oil teachings (You would have to pay over $300,000 to complete their courses.) They saw all of things and called it for what it is...injustice. Amazingly, what started out as a prank has grown into a world-wide movement and now all across the world on Feb. 10th, in honor of Lisa McPherson, a young woman who tragically lost her life because of the Cult of Scientology, people will be gathering outside of Scientology centers to make their voices heard... As for the "anonymous" group, I rather suspect Scientology is behind that. They, like fundamentalist Christians, like to pretend they're being persecuted when it's actually folks calling them on their male-bovine-manure. posted by

Scientology is the only "religion" officially disproven by science. They lie about their teachings (OT-III is freely available on the web now, though) They lie about their numbers (50,000, not millions.) They lie about their founder (his experience with drug abuse is in *MAINTAINING* it, not eliminating it, and the only reason he wasn't court-martialed in WWII is that the Navy had better things to do). In short, they're just like any other religion, just marginally worse. posted by

As a result of protections afforded the organization under the mantle of religion, including tax and financial disclosure exemptions and other privacies, little is known about the Church of Scientology's methodology, net worth or profits. The corporation acts somewhat like a multilevel marketing organization charging for personal "audits" or treatments and an array of other materials throughout several ascending tiers of membership. Like most pyramid-type multilevel marketing models, some at the top earn significant profits as the lower levels of new conscripts pay for audits and products which enriches the top tier. Cruise, a widely known celebrity and spokesman for the company, has taken a very rigid stance against the psychiatric field's methods and use of drugs to treat psychological disorders. Scientologists feel their system of drugless psychological treatment is empirical. Cruise's arrogance toward Matt Lauer during a televised interview when he angrily told Lauer that he knew all about psychology and Lauer and everyone else knew jack, spoke volumes about the Scientological mindset.
