Fine Dining at the Bakersfield Inn

A few weeks ago Nancy posted some great old photos of Bakersfield.  The Bakersfield Inn was once a classic, a beautiful place for a meal or fine lodging at a time when Union Avenue was the "strip" going through town under its arch.  In the mid 60's a fire took all of that away.  The night of the fre, all 3 TV stations in town posted news bulletins on the event.

I thought I would share some downloads of a menu in my collection from the Inn.  I'm not sure what year this is from, but judging from the prices, it was a while back.  Hope you enjoy the pics of a little bit of history of what used to be something great.

Filet Mignon $4.50.  Now that's something I could live with.

Did you know that legend has it that the Bakersfield Inn coined the word MOTEL?  Small cabins along hightways were called Motor Inns.  It was a logical leap to combine Motor and Hotel to come up with the common name for them.  Funny..now they've changed around and want to be called HOTELS.

It was one of the elegant stopping off places for the celebrities and the rich traveling from the Southland to the Bay Area.  Maison Jaussauds (SP?) was another (now Golden West Casino) and the Saddle And Sirloin.  Famous eating places.   Check out the pictures I added to the album and take a look at the El Tejon Hotel in downtown Bakersfield.  It hosted Cousin Herbs TV show from it's penthouse suite.
