What is your favorite scary movie?
There have always been some really cheezy movies that come out that are supposed to be scary but aren't. Then there are the ones that you can't sleep at night after watching. What is your favorite scary movie? I really love the Final Destination movies. Not horror scary really but creepy and suspenseful.

I think the movie that scared me the most was the Exorcist, there was so much controversy surrounding it when it was released, when I finally saw it , it only added to it's creepiness.

I saw that movie, it was creepy!

I reccommend it to everyone who wants to be really creeped out by a well made movie.

Ooooh, Devil's Rejects was one messed up movie. Dawn of the Dead (the remake) was great. Zombies on crack comin' at you full speed! Sean of the dead is another great one, but it's more funny than scary. I'm a big fan of the Friday the 13th series, but they started getting lame after about the 5th one. One of the all time scariest has to be the Texas Chainsaw massacre. I'm pretty much a sucker for any zombie type movie.

The first Night Mare on Elm Street was good.

Poltergeist is the all time one for me, just because I saw it when I was about 7.  Freaked me out.

The Entity disturbed me out when I saw it in the theatre.

I'll have to check out Dead Birds.

I'm sorry but the Blair Witch Project scared the cr ap out of me when I first saw it... I didn't know it was fake at the time.

Although watching it years later *finally* on DVD it is pretty cheesy, one of my favorites is "Trick Or Treat". I thought the character Sammi Curr was so hot back in the 80s, turned out the actor was actually one of the "Solid Gold" dancers. Geez, anyone remember that cheesy show*lol* I also loved all the "Nightmare On Elm Street" movies growing up, the Freddie vs Jason one was pretty lame though....

As a little kid, I thought "Legend of Boggy Creek" was scary. I bought it last year on DVD for $6 at Long's drug store and had to laugh that I thought it was scary at one time!

I still love "Interview With The Vampire"!

My son believes IT is the scariest movie ever.  My other son thinks that the Grudge is the scariest.  I have never seen either one.  I will just take their word for it.  :-)

In it's day, Rosemary's Baby topped the list for me.  I had read the book and it scared me silly.  I started it one evening and finished it at 3 AM.  My ritual was to go downstairs and check the fireplace before going to sleep and you couldn't have gotten me down those stairs for love nor money that night.

IT scared me silly. I hate clowns anyway, they are all from Hell!!!! Books freak me out, too, and Pet Semetary was the only one I actually threw across the room when I read the last line.

Another freaky movie that creeped me out was U-Turn. They were some freaks!

The first Nightmare on Elm Street is pretty much the only movie that ever scared me (when I was younger of course). I want a movie that will have me on the edge of my seat, holding my breath (though I don't realize I am doing it), make me jump and scream. The only movie that came even close was "Silent Hill". Ending sucked however. Did everything but make me jump and scream. The gore factor however was amazing. Loved it. The best "scary" movie sequels however has been the Saw series. Cant wait for the new one.

The Omen, the original one with Gregory Peck, has long been a favorite and a Halloween tradition of mine. Interview With the Vampire is both a favorite movie and book. But as far as more recent movies, I would have to say The Grudge is the scariest I have seen. That one freaked me out so much, I only saw it once, and I am actually considering staying away from the second one until my seventeen-year-old son sees it first!

Just saw Grudge 2. It had some creepy moments. The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie: very disturbing. I loved it! A Spanish flick called The Devil's Backbone made my skin crawl at the Fox a few years back. Yikes!

Still my favorite movie of all time is The Exorcist.  Just because of what it meant in horror movies.

I'm a lifelong scholar and unabashed fan of horror movies and the scariest is still ... THE EXORCIST! Followed by THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. The most recent scariest film has to be THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

The original "Night of the Living Dead."  Saw it for the first time at a midnight show at Stockdale Six, and missed half the movie due to all the potheads laughing and firing up in the theater.

Saw it three weeks later on Channel 5 at around 11 p.m., alone at home.  I won't ever do that again.  Movie scared the hell out of me.  Something about black and white movies with low production values made it even creepier.

Jaws.........from the first scene where the girl was attacked while swimming. Everybody was wearing their popcorn and sodas, and the theater was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Place goes to Play Misty For Me, and show is Sleeping With The Enemy. A great scary movie blasts you out of your seat, lulls you into thinking everythings going to be OK, and then drops the bomb on you. Honorable mention goes to Carrie.

Great choices Gary.  When Jaws played at the Crest Drive in my ex and I went to see it.  Mind you..he's 6'2 and at the time, around 200 lbs.  He wasn't afraid of anything and could go bear hunting with a switch.  When that shark came up out of the water beside the boat I thought my ex was gonna tear the door off the truck.  I laughed so hard at him that my adrenalin didn't get a chance to rush.

Play Misty For Me was terrifying.  And, oddly enough, never mentioned.  Have people forgotten it  Everytime I hear "First Time, Ever I Saw Your Face", that movie come rushing back.

I think Play Misty For Me was Clint's directorial debut. Good movie. Way ahead of its time.
Saw III is coming out this Friday. Gotta go see that.

I remember having nightmares for years after watching "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark" when I was young. But as an adult, the one that got me the most was the first "Hellraiser". But, my actual Favorite one was "It". Pennywise really did it for me!

I would have to say that Saw scared the crap out of me when i saw it..it was really gruesome.

Not a big fan of horror movies myself, but I remember (YEARS back) being scared silly by X:  The Man with X-Ray Eyes starring Ray Milland.  Speaking of old black-and-white ones.

Surprised to see Blair Witch up there.  After about 15 minutes, I was just waiting for them to get killed.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Oct 23, 2006 at 04:35 PM
I didn't find Blair Witch scary at all, but it was an absolute masterpiece of editing. I'm with you Tom. I wanted them to die and die quickly. All the characters were totally annoying.
posted by NancyII on Oct 23, 2006 at 04:37 PM
Too much hype and not enough substance for Blair Witch in my opinion.  Psychological thrillers are far more terrifying than heads chopped off rolling down the street with blood flying from eye sockets.
posted by TomW on Oct 23, 2006 at 04:38 PM
Pete, it was a masterpiece of editing, though I don't know if I agree with you on the "die quickly" part. :)

For me it's POLTERGEIST.  I was about 9 years old when I first saw it and it scared me and fascinated me at the same time.  I even remember taking my Ronald McDonald clown doll and burrying him in the closet after seeing the movie.

I loved Frailty, but to me it was not scarry... just one of those movies you don't get out of your head.

THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. FREAKED ME OUT AS A KID.   THE OLD VERSION, NOT THE NEW ONE.  I DON'T LIKE HOW EVERYONE IS REMAKING THE CLASSICS.....

In addition to The Devils Rejects, I would also recomend Hostel. It's a very disturbing movie in that it makes you think, "Wow, this could really happen".

Passion of the Christ. Because people continue to believe in this stupid myth.
posted by anonymous on Oct 25, 2006 at 04:27 PM
If you think that the Passion of Christ is scary as a film because it's a myth, then you have much to look forward to when you stand before Christ to explain your ignorance of historical fact with your eternal destiny on the line.  Now that's really scary.  I have always thought that Hitchcock's "Psycho" captured the best of classical suspense and fear.

Anny, you're afraid of something that doesn't exist. And there are a billion people like you. How scary is that? And another billion believe in Allah. That's mighty scary too. How can so many people be so stupid? Now THAT's scary.

Can we please stick to discussions of movies, and leave religion out of it? This is not the forum for preaching or religious arguments. Save it for your church group.

I was discussing a movie which I find frightening....Passion of the Christ. Others found The Omen and The Exorcist scary. They have religious themes. Dracula is repelled by crucifixes.

I'd say Passion ranks right up there with 'em. But mostly due to its effect on what should be otherwise rational minds.
