Take The Time To Fight Phishing

Here's a serious but apolitical topic that is nonetheless important.  Five minutes out of your day can go a long way to protect millions of Americans.

"Phishing" emails.  We all get them.

They are made to appear like legitimate emails from financial institutions, designed to panic you into taking hasty steps to "protect" your account.  These actions, of course, include supplying important personal and account information.

How do you identify a phishing email?  Microsoft has some pointers:

http://www.microsoft.com/pr...

Now, when we receive phishing emails, how many of us simply ignore them?

Don't.  Take the time to forward the fraudulent emails to the actual financial institution that is being impersonated.  They will collect forwarded emails and supply them to investigators.

How do you find out where to forward fraudulent emails?

Manually type in the URL (Web address) of the institution being impersonated.  Do not click on the link in the email itself.  It's a fake.

Look for a link to "Contact Us," "Security," Customer Service," or the like.  Sooner or later you will find instructions on how and where to forward fraudulent emails for investigation.

Here are the reporting email addresses for some of the most frequently impersonated institutions:

National reporting email address:  spam@uce.gov

When you get such an email, please take the time and trouble to forward the email to the institution's fraud investigation department.  Each forwarded email that they receive strengthens their case against the perpetrators of email fraud.

Thanks for posting those addresses H4F.  I usually do delete them because a lot have the warning before you open them that they may be harmful and do you know the sender.  I'll send all the rest to the addresses above though...I hate that stuff.

Lately it seems I'm a lonely sexually frustrated man who needs the company of Jack OR Jill and sometimes otherw who have names similar to names on my address list or even on the blog.   They are watching us.   Whoooodoooodoooodooo.

How nice for them that they have robots to do the work for them.  Technology isn't always preasant is it?  Thanks again..I've made note of the addresses.

These should be sent to your server and the government spam reporting sites as well. You ought to "block sender" also. Many people do not know there is a spam reporting government site.

Great post and thanks. I didn't know there were reporting sites and I will take your advice. I just recieved the other day a "paypal" email to "confirm" my transactions. I junked it but it did make me a little afraid because I had signed for a free music site and then promptly cancelled it the next day. I thought they might be billing me.

This kind of post is a good one to simply repost over time as a reminder and for new folks like me who don't know the options.

Thanks, Hardliner

Good ideas, Kat.  I've added a permanent link to both my profile and my sidebar.

I only got 2 out of 10 but the 2 I got were the only sites on the list I use. I still suck though.

Good stuff, but Sam, it usually does no good to "block sender."  The next one will come from the same guy with a completely different "From:" line.

.

9 of 10 right.  Missed one on Amazon.
