Hardliner4freedom - > Starship Sigma +5 -> Republican / FCC Media Power Grab, Chapter 2
Republican / FCC Media Power Grab, Chapter 2
Well, what have we here?  Senator Barbara Boxer comes forth with another damning report about corporate media consolidation that she says the FCC shelved.
.
This one is even more damning.
.
According to a Washington Post story, the number of commercial radio stations on the air rose 5.9 percent, while the number of station owners plummeted 35 percent during the time period from March 1996 to March 2003.
.
And who's deeply involved in a renewed effort to relax or repeal restrictions against monopolistic media ownership?  Right-wing friendly Clear Channel Communications, Inc.
.
The Republican majority on the Federal Communications Commission board voted, among other things, to "eliminate its existing system of measuring radio markets and use one favored by Arbitron, a private firm best known for measuring ratings. The commission decided not to force broadcasters to divest stations in markets where the new boundaries would push the broadcast companies over the limit," according to the Washington Post.
.
Funny, this is about the time when the last remnants of dissenting opinion started disappearing from the radio airwaves.
.
I ask again: why would a Republican-led FCC, and a Republican President Bush, be so determined to give big media even more power, if the media had a "liberal agenda?"
.
I intend to shoot down this mindless myth that the media are "liberal" -- proof by irrefutable proof.  This mythical "liberal media" claim was itself popularized by the media -- and right-wing agitators bent on purging the last trace of dissent from the airwaves.
.
If you have not already watched the 1946 school film Despotism, produced by Encyclopedia Britannica, I strongly urge doing so.
.

.
Toward the end is a foreboding -- and astoundingly prophetic -- warning of the danger that a free and democratic society faces when media control falls into the hands of a privileged few with a narrow political view.

It's a must-see.

The real news here is that Barbara Boxer actually did something. Well, sort of, I guess...

My favorite question when asked about the liberal media is to ask people where they heard about it.  Word of mouth or did you hear it on tv, on the radio, in the paper, etc?

Adam, I wish more liberals took media activism seriously.  It concerns me to no end that liberal groups seem only to focus on two issues: the Iraq War and voter access.  Ensuring voter access is a moot exercise until we can ensure that voters are getting all sides of the issues.
.
Broadcast media are required by FCC regulations to operate in the public interest.  There is no way in hell that it can be in the public's interest to devote 95% of your radio opinion shows to the same third of the community.
.
There is another third that is generally liberal, and still another third that is independent and looks at issues more closely than they look at  political parties.
.
To leave this remaining two-thirds of the community completely voiceless cannot possibly be serving the public interest.

Tom, that's my point.  The "liberal media" myth is spread by talking heads in the media.

Hardliner, not sure I agree with you about voter access being moot.  Even *WITH* near-total conservative control of the media, they don't seem able to win an election without voter suppression.
.
But yes, media balance is essential.  The Internet is tipping that balance at least a bit.

I assume you mean presidential elections.  I'm sure that pulling Diebold machines wouldn't stop Kevin McCarthy from winning.  Neither would doing so have returned control of Congress to Democrats.

Exactly, Hardliner.  Although I'd have loved to see a viable candidate running against McCarthy to prevent him from shoveling money at other candidates elsewhere the way Thomas always did.  At one point I believe he was the single greatest Republican donor in the country.

Hardliner, I got that, I was just restating to put the specific questions in their heads.  As for a viable McCarthy alternative, what would that look like?

What would a viable McCarthy alternative look like?  Me!  hahahahaha
.
McCarthy would be tough to beat, especially since he has gotten my votes, too.  He's libertarian enough to bring in Bako's moderate voters.
.

I see the point about donations to other Republican causes, though.  Sometimes, when voting for a candidate that you have relatively few issue disagreements with, you have to consider whether his/her win would empower other people who are extremely dangerous.
.
Take the Senate, for example.  In Senate races, I will vote Democratic no matter what.

He's going to get a good challenge next cycle.  My guess is that he'll embarrass himself enough in the next 2 years that a solid Democrat could take him down.

There's a big problem not only with media consolidation, but with the new huge indecency fines and startup costs, it's very prohibitive for any independent minded person to start their own radio station. In 2004 the FCC issued a record $7.9 million in fines. In 2005 no indecency fines were issued. Are we now facing a fearful media and a vindictive FCC or are we letting the parents television council (PTC) tell us what we can watch or hear over the airwaves?
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 19, 2006 at 08:44 AM
My beef is that liberals have relying on the belief that conservatives will "embarrass themselves" for so long that this accounts, in part, for the weakness of their message.  It's as if they feel that they don't have to try to perfect their message; they keep waiting for the right wing's own message to bring them down.
.
It isn't working out that way.
.
That's why I pound Dems on message delivery and for neglecting media activism.  They need to sharpen their message and demand the media access to deliver it.

H4F, you've got a good point about that.  What I meant was that he'll have a voting record on issues people understand.  But there is no substitute for a candidate that speaks clearly in a way that conveys not just their beliefs, but their belief structure.
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 19, 2006 at 08:51 AM

Pete, that's another factor, I'm sure.  And that's another reason why the Bush regime must be toppled at all costs.  I would vote for an administration full of Phil Angelides'es if that were the only way to get these evil monsters out of power.
.
Have you ever notice that when one of their powerful people get into trouble, they invariably replace him with someone who is just as damaging, but less flamboyant?
.
When Newt Gingrich fell, they replaced him with some quieter yet even further to the right: Dennis Hastert.  When John Ashcroft stepped down, we got someone more mellow yet just as pubic-fixated: Gonzales.  Gonzales is handing the Parents Television Council an olive branch laced with love letters.
.

The cancer at the top is what needs to be excised.
