The Most Absolutely Conscienceless Self-Serving Administration in U.S. History
I have charged, many times now, that this monstrous evil that surrounds the President and dominates today's Republican leadership is the most absolutely, totally, 100%-pure-partisan self-serving monster that has ever disgraced America, basing its every single action on whether it serves to strengthen their hold on power.
.
Nothing these people do or plan to do has any other purpose than to entrench their own political power.  I have never seen anything like it.
.
Interested in helping rebuild Iraq?  You had better pass the right wing's political litmus test first if you want to significantly improve your chances for consideration, according to this Washington Post story.
.
A few snippets from the story:
.
"O'Beirne's staff posed blunt questions to some candidates about domestic politics: Did you vote for George W. Bush in 2000? Do you support the way the president is fighting the war on terror? Two people who sought jobs with the U.S. occupation authority said they were even asked their views on Roe v. Wade ."
.
"Many of those selected because of their political fidelity spent their time trying to impose a conservative agenda on the postwar occupation, which sidetracked more important reconstruction efforts and squandered goodwill among the Iraqi people"
.
"To recruit the people he wanted, O'Beirne sought résumés from the offices of Republican congressmen, conservative think tanks and GOP activists. He discarded applications from those his staff deemed ideologically suspect, even if the applicants possessed Arabic language skills or postwar rebuilding experience."
.
"There were a few Democrats who wound up getting jobs with the CPA, but almost all of them were active-duty soldiers or State Department Foreign Service officers. Because they were career government employees, not temporary hires, O'Beirne's office could not query them directly about their political leanings."

.
Incredible.  Just plain incredible.  Even reconstruction in Iraq takes a back seat to this administration's indefatigable commitment to rewarding their own and strengthening their political power.

It looks to me like the DemocratIC candidates may make some gains in the November election, but it's scary to think what they'd do against a 'Publican opposition who had a shred of public-spiritedness.    Bush should have been creamed in the '04 election, but instead a timid Kerry campaign came in (just barely) second.    Howard Dean tried, but what we needed was a Howard Beale.
.
Where's the DemocratIC candidate who will stand up and yell "I'm as MAD as HELL and I'm NOT going to take this anymore!"?

He's the guy looking for a tiny little voice in the media.  It's a testimony to the state of today's media imbalance when a single Keith Olberman speech (or a Stephen Colbert roast) can give you the refreshing feeling that a year's worth of built-up steam has just been released.

Or to use the Department of Homeland Security to "investigate" reporters they don't like...

Now picture a column like mine, rockin' the casba across the page from Marylee.
.
When the media gather the gumption to do that, we'll start saying "fair and balanced."

Exactly so, Hardliner.  When the Californian puts equal emphasis (print and blog both) on a left-leaning column...well, they'll still be on my "list" for dropping Doonesbury, but I'll knock a few years' purgatory off their sentence.
posted by TomW on Sep 19, 2006 at 07:02 PM
Would you be up for that, Hardliner?  How often do Marylee's columns run?  Cause if you're willing to commit to it, we could probably get a letter campaign started.

Yes, I would.  I'd temper it a bit; I'd use language less strong, of course, but I'm an experienced writer who understands news writing styles and can follow the AP Stylebook.

My email address is real.

Sweet.  Let's start poking around and see if anything comes loose.  You've got a good following here.  Let's get an idea for how many eyeballs the paper would need to give you some space.

I think you'd possibly need a catchier name, something like "Battlestar Galactica"...

The Antiestablishment Strikes Back  hahahaha

That title would be half your column.
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 19, 2006 at 08:27 PM
I'm not worried about it.  I'm sure the name of the column would be chosen for me.  Again, that's not meant to diss the Californian.  It's just an editorial thang.

Check you out, getting all AP-stylin' with the italics for citation already.  ;)

Thinking about the column title, I scoured for "left" quotations.  How about a column called "Left Free," with the explanatory quotation

"Error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to admit it."  --Thomas Jefferson

posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 19, 2006 at 08:46 PM
Actually, that's "Error of opinion may be tolerated when reason is left free to combat it."
.
If memory serves me correctly.

Yours makes more sense, sounds more like Jefferson.  You can't trust anything you read on the Internet. :)

The thing I like best about W is that he totally ignores all you whiney, whimpy lefties that have nothing better to do than sit around and complain. While the Republicans may be the party of bad ideas, the Dumbocrats are the party of absolutly no ideas and are perfectly willing to drag the country down for political gain. And on top of that have provided us with some of the most screwed up presidents in the history of the country. Johnson, Carter, Clinton just to name a few. On top of that we have to contend with Fienstien, Boxer and Nancy the drunk. As a third generation life long resident of Kern County what saddens me the most is this huge inflix of nitwit, socialist, far left lemmings that have been thrust upon us.  Please, please go back to wherever you came from. But then they probably don't want you either.

Actually, Dubya ignores most everything except for brush clearing.  Imagine what a mess he would have made if he *HADN'T* spent so much time on vacation.  Major cities could have been attacked by terrorists, or hit by hurricanes, or even teetering on the brink of economic collapse due to idiotic economic moves.

.
Oh, wait.

.

I'm sure that as a third-generation resident of Kern County you're saddened--but take heart--the recent influx of new residents should help reduce the inbreeding any day now.

Hey, Hardliner, how 'bout "Left Hemisphere"?  Too obscure?  Then how would *YOU* like to be the "Liberal Media."?
posted by TomW on Sep 20, 2006 at 08:49 AM
Charlie, I try to ignore the whiny, wimpy lefties too.  I also ignore the whiny, dear-leader-please-save-me, take-my-freedom-for-security righties.  There are people who respect the Constitution, the rule of law, and aren't whining and aren't hiding in their closet because the boogeyman of the week is out to get them.  They are Republicans and Democrats.  But they aren't represented by this administration.

As for dragging the country down for political gain, are you better off now than you were 6 years ago?  Feeling more secure in your job, your health, your retirement, or from foreign threats?
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 20, 2006 at 09:01 AM

So, Charlie, no comment on the blog topic?  No answer to the charge that today's Republican leadership bases its every decision on its potential for political gain?
.
Or are you just whining about that fact that Bush critics are free to speak?  That would support my argument in the two FCC topics.  People like Charlie are the people without ideas -- as evidenced by the fact that they almost never debate the issue at hand, but instead complain about the fact that it's being debated.
.
BTW, read my profile for an accurate description of my political views.

I like the liberal puns.  Writing Liberally, Applied Liberally, etc.

posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 20, 2006 at 09:07 AM

I like that, Random.  Call me the liberal media.  That way, when the wingnuts feel threatened and bash the media, I know they're honoring me -- after all, there aren't any other liberal media.
.

Seriously, I never thought of myself as that liberal.  I have one liberal issue (universal health care) and one ultra-liberal issue (human sexuality).  The trouble is that merely standing up for freedom and the Constitution seems to win the label these days -- regardless of what one's other views actually are.

posted by TomW on Sep 20, 2006 at 09:13 AM
You're not kidding.  I'm not as liberal as some, but I put on the badge after people hurled it at me.  I've got more libertarian leanings but I believe in a safety net.  I believe in government that protects its people from threats both foreign and domestic, whether that threat is a terrorist group or a company that wants to dump sludge in your drinking water.  And of course, the Constitution, which right there makes me a Stalinist apparently (huh?)
posted by TomW on Sep 20, 2006 at 09:20 AM
Oh, Charlie, if you think the nitwit, far left lemmings are bad now, wait a few years.  Bakersfield is hitting a critical mass where folks who are liberal no longer feel they have to leave town after high school.  10 years from now, they'll be pride parades and cultural fairs and a liberal mayor and people talking about inclusion out loud at the grocery store.
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 20, 2006 at 09:54 AM
Besides, Tom, the nitwit far-left lemmings wouldn't be able to leave town for more liberal climes even if they wanted to.
.
Close to a million dollars for a tiny home in the Bay Area?  You need to be a freakin' thunder god to afford that.
posted by TomW on Sep 20, 2006 at 09:57 AM

I wish they were like lemmings.  If liberals would blindly follow, we wouldn't have to have a meeting about where to have the meeting that decides where the meeting is going to be.

"The Most Absolutely Conscienceless Self-Serving Administration in U.S. History" NO, why would you think that?

Hardliner, did a Thunder God beat you out for a house?  You sound like a Thor loser.

Tom, you mean a scoping meeting? Those are the best kinds of meetings if you like pastries and coffee.
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 22, 2006 at 11:58 AM

Funny.  I like that.  But really, I'm happy here.  Being able to buy my home at 1/10 the price ($96,000 in 1989) is a good reason to stay here sitting pretty.

Once again I'm left out.  Where are the meetings for us wild-eyed donut-and-Pepsi types?  "Big tent" harrumph!  Damned narrow-minded liberal bigots.  See if you get *MY* vote or either of my spouses' on your meeting agenda.
posted by TomW on Sep 22, 2006 at 12:11 PM
I'll talk to the conference about including Pepsi.  We've worked out where to have the meeting about where to have the metting where we can discuss that, so we're making progress.
