Steroids in local high schools, junior colleges?
If you haven't had a chance to read about "Operation Raw Deal" I encourage you to do so. It seems that two Bakersfield men were among 124 busted by the DEA in the largest steroid investigation in U.S. history.

I've attached a link to the story: http://www.bakersfield.com/...

It says that one of the defendants -- Tyler Stumbo -- filled 88 steroid orders in a three-month period. Stumbo is just 23 years old. This is pure speculation but I'm sure his clientele are of a much younger persuasion. So who's buying those drugs?

I'm sure it's not just the meatheads at the local gym. Could there be any student-athletes at Bakersfield College or Taft College? How about high school athletes?

I'd like to think our area athletes would avoid the dangers of these drugs but sometimes the lure of success, college scholarships and money are too much for a young influential mind to overcome.

The fallout begins nationally in the coming weeks, and local fallout won't be far behind.

If you would have read the affidavit that was posted as a link in connection with this story, you would see that more than half of those 88 orders were delivered to an undercover mailbox in the San Diego area.  Therefore, less than half were actual sales to the public.  With that said, in the affidavit it also goes on to say that Tyler's attention had gone from local sales in the Bakersfield and the state of California to purely online sales.  So, if you figure half of what is left is online sales and the other half of what's left is California sales.  And then further break it down to half of the California sales being local here in Bakersfield, then you are left with 1/8 of the sales being in Bakersfield.  The news story did say that Tyler was arrested in Berkeley, so it is safe to say that he some business going on there too.  You are left with approximately 10-11 local sales in a 3-month period.  I would say it is possible for those to end up in the hands of high school athletes, but you also have to remember, he had other people out there getting rid of the stuff for him, if you read the affidavit.  It was those other people who possibly put some of these items into the hands of high school athletes.  Does he deserve to be punished for manufacturing?  Yes!  But does he need to be punished because his vendors let them end up in the hands of high school kids?  No!  That would be like punishing Anheiser-Busch for all of the idiots that get DUIs or punishing Smith & Wesson for gang shootings.  They create the products, but they are not responsible if they fall into illegitimate hands.

nglann, your logic about Stumbo not being responsible for where the steroids he sold ended up is just plain nonsense. He is one link of a chain of criminals who import, manufacture, distribute, and sell to the end user. Everyone in the link plays a part in where the illegal drugs end up. That is like arguing that the Mexican cartel that smuggles 20 kilos of heroin into the US is not partly responible for an addict overdosing and dying in an alley off Union Ave. And beer and handguns are legal for these companies to sell; underground steroids are not.

Real quick. The blog was posted before the DEA released the affidavit, so you're right that most of the orders were sent to San Diego. But that doesn't mean a local high school or college athlete didn't get a hold of few vials.

It was pure speculation on my part.

We have a number of high schoolers saying "this school is 'roided up." It's was heresay and not worth looking into, UNTIL these arrests were made. Now, we have a local distributor that could have a link to some athletes. Maybe there is a hint of truth to these accusations.

My son says he knows young adults that roid up here in Bako. I asked him after reading this and frankly I was stunned. He says they aren't athletes either the ones he knows..Its a recreational use for them? He didn't want to talk about it when I started asking a lot of questions.

it is so easy to get. I have been offered them at the gym. I know many guys who use them to bulk up and build muscle to fit the image of what a healthy man is to look like now days. cant say I havent been tempted, but I still choose not to go that path. Also, look how bulk some high school kids are w/ muscles...that is not normal to see a 17 yr who weighs in w/ close to 200 lbs of muscle, w/o the help of roids.

I knew of a couple of people that used steroids as recent as 5 years ago (I'm 29 now). It seemed to be the recreational thing to do in a particular crowd that I hung out with. As a matter of fact I knew a guy in Bakersfield that was on roids that died of a massive heart attack running on a treadmill . He was only 23. I heard of a few kids that used steriods while I was in high school who I played football with but I never saw them take it/them.

Steroid use doesn't produce a "high" like other drugs.

So I'm not sure why someone would consider using them as "recreational".

I'm sorry, but I don't see Tyler Stumbo (or the other guy arrested in Bako) as the guy hanging out at the HIGH SCHOOL  to sell illegal steroids that he manufactured in his bathroom! He was (obviously) using the Hushmail encrypted email system, which means he was selling online.

I think if people are worried about drug use in high school, they should be focused on meth, or marijuana or the massive alcoholism that is being perpetuated.

I think, that if an adult ATHLETE is informed about steroids, and where he is getting them from, and still CHOOSES to do it, so be it.

I also think that the DEA ONCE AGAIN blew a ton of money on something that people have already forgotten about. There was  a similar "Operation" in Mexico a few years ago...anyone remember the name of it? Because I don't. They should keep their focus on the "real" drugs that people are actually getting addicted to and DYING from. If a dude is willing to shrink his nuts so his arms look huge.....who f'ing cares???

And while I understand that it's illegal and those that are guilty should be reprimanded, they are going to be treated like a Meth manufacturer. Doesn't ANYONE other than me see the difference here?  Adult athlete, looking for an edge vs. Adult Meth user, stealing his neighbors camera's and jewelry to trade for drugs, or the woman prostituting herself to pay for drugs.....or or or....

Operation Raw Deal was a HUGE waste of time, effort and tax payers money!
