Race to Victory: Shame on me for rooting for Toyota, Dodge and Ford

If Mother Nature decides to take Sunday off we might have a race. Of course, I wouldn't mind a good ol' fashioned do-over after looking over the eight bums I picked in this week's Race to Victory contest.

Just looking over the car manufacturers for my team of drivers gives me the willys. I have three Dodges, two Toyotas, two Chevrolets and a Ford. That's just painful for me to admit. I'll be rooting for a car other than a Chevrolet.

Just to give a little more personal information out, I don't openly root for foreign-manufactured cars or even the two other domestic car manufacturers in NASCAR. There's only one car-maker in the Priest family: Chevrolet.

Well, at least that's how it was for the 30 years my dad drove to the Delco-Remy parking lot in Anderson, Ind. Things have changed a little, my mom bought a 1994 Ford Mustang until my dad made her sell it, and then my dad broke down and bought a Dodge Ram a few years back. Those were the first non-Generous Motors vehicles that were parked in our driveway.

Now, they only have two. Both are my dad's pride and joys: A 1964 Oldsmobile 442 Cutlass and a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza convertible.

I digress. You're here to read about my picks for the Auto Club 500, not read about trivial family matters.

A group

Clint Bowyer, Chevrolet: DEI, Inc., is going to get a win. It's as simple as that.

Denny Hamlin, Dodge: This isn't his favorite track but Hamlin will stay in top 10.

B group

Mark Martin, Chevrolet: This is painful because for most of my life I've associated Mark Martin with Ford. But he's another guy that's consistently in top 15.

Jamie McMurray, Ford: Have you seen our list of B drivers. I call shenanigans.

Juan Pablo Montoya, Dodge: Juan will take out a few drivers en route to a top 15 finish.

Reed Sorenson, Dodge: He's got a Target on his back, so I had something to aim at when I threw the dart.

C group

Sam Hornish Jr., Dodge: I've liked Sam from his days in Indianapolis. Just wish he didn't pass Andretti on the final lap two years ago.

Brian Vickers, Toyota: I'm taking Vickers because the guy I replaced in North Carolina now works for Red Bull Racing. He's one of the PR minions for Vickers.

That's it. My unscientific way of selecting drivers. Now, you know what you're up against.

Who do you have this week?

A Group

Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick

B Group

Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray, Juan Montoya and Robby Gordon

C Group

Michael Waltrip and John Andretti

Besides name recognition, I took Montoya because I used to follow Yahoo's Chevron message board and all the ex-Texaco guys there used to pine for the Havoline car to win. I don't see where the car brand makes much difference since they all look alike. back in the 60s, a Dodge looked like a Dodge, a Ford a Ford, etc, etc. Aerodynamics now dictate they all look like the same lump on wheels, so who cares?

Denny Hamlin, Dodge

Hamlin drives a Toyota. He's a teammate of Tony and Kyle.

A Group

Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson (I want Johnson to die, die, die with festering boils, DIE! But he wins so [expletive] much, I hadda pick him)

B Group

Ryan Newman, Casey Mears, Dale, Jr., Jamie McMurray

C Group

Brian Vickers, Michael Waltrip (who picks Ricky Rudd? Isn't he, like, 77 years old?)

An old Chevy went by the other day. It was a '55, but I had to wait to see the taillights to tell. Nowadays you can hardly tell a Mitsubishi from a Mercedes.

Just saw the National Anthem at Fontana....Jeff Burton was the only driver shown with his hand over his heart!!!!  Do ya think "some folks" in Bako will boycot NASCAR? GRIN

I hope none of those drivers get in a position to need a flight medic.

Oops. I don't know what I was thinking. Of course, it was after midnight when I finished typing this blog. Yes, Hamlin drives a Toyota. Use to be a Chevrolet.

Well, with 21 laps complete, I'm praying for a washout. Three of my drivers -- Sorenson, Hamlin and Hornish -- are in the garage. Hornish is done. Hamlin and Sorenson can only sit and wait until the race goes yellow before the crew can begin working on their cars.

Does anyone know what happens if the race is a washout both Sunday and Monday? I think they have to start over but I'm not sure.

Please would somebody stick a fork in this race? Another downpour and they're still 40-plus laps from the halfway point.

I do believe it got totally cancelled.  At least FOX started showing cartoons!!! hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder if that is a hint!?

Your faux pas on Hamlin angered the Toyota rain gods. This washout is your fault, and yours alone.

I knew something was up when I got home from work at 5:15 and they were only 26 laps into a race that was supposed to be over at least half an hour earlier.

What's tomorrow's forecast for Fontana? Hmmm. Mostly sunny, high of 67. Never trust a weatherman.

One of my drivers, Michael Waltrip, blew an oil line on the parade lap, lol!

Three or more hours of NASCAR announcers waiting for the rain delay to be over makes for a fascinating telecast, eh?

Four in the top ten, here - woo hoo!

I had 4 in the top 10 also

As far as angering the rain gods, I think I angered a god but it's more like the "You're-going-to-get-this-race-in-no-matter-what god." Seriously, my wife and I watched the tail end of the Oscars, and I flipped over to Fox to watch Family Guy. Next thing, I know there's an update, saying they're going to try and start the race at 1 a.m. EST. I couldn't believe it.

Thankfully, they realized that no one on the East Coast was watching, and moved to Monday.

As I wrote early on Sunday, I had three drivers in the garage on lap 21. So it was absolutely awful. I'm like the Bakersfield Jam, the most futile team in the city.

Maybe my luck will change in Vegas. Check out Thursday's paper to see who won the week.

I pull for any Dodge in the field. Brand loyaalty first drivers second. I have had such bad luck with my 22r toyota that I intend never to root for such a troublesome product. Although  I really like Michel Waltrup, and D.J. and occaisionally wish them some small successes. For years The Chevy and Ford camps have cried and lobbied so hard for advantages, that I agonize every time they succede. I'll never get over G.M. forcing Olds Buick and especially Pontiac out of racing.Since Pontiacs ouster and Gibbs switch first to Chevy and now the hated Toyota. Our family has bought 3  Chrysler brands. The latest a PT high out put turbo and a 300C. Both beyond compare. and none of the smog  and repair issues. I also own a Dodge Neon with 300,000 miles and have had to replace one 16 dollar fan switch., that was covered by  warrenty. I can see the hand writing on the wall though and would expect that  Chrysler is an endangered  species.Much like in the Trucks. I only ocaiaionaly check the Truck races, now that Dodge is down to 2 to 4 entries. The only way I can get satisfaction is to return to my computer and type in Toyota sludge! That gives me a loud last laugh. Also with the State Wrestling Finals being covered so well by the Bakersfield Californian, I can forget all about brand loyalty an soak up the superb stories going on.Good luck to Kyle West 135lbs ,Oakridge. Steven Vasquez  160 lb Central Catholic, Rudy Bertchi 215 lbs Oakdale. Dominic Gales @ 285 lbs. O.W to either West or Vasquez. If Vasquez wins he will have really earned it with Jason  Welch,   no. 1 in the nation in his weight. But if dominance has any sway then West could earn the o,w, award. Also go Jake Varner in the NCAA's....Bud,..Linden Ca....
