LastRites - > Last Rites -> A Heisman pose for Ryan Mathews
A Heisman pose for Ryan Mathews

Another game like that and I'm starting a petition to add Ryan Mathews to the Heisman watch. Did you see his performance against Rutgers on Labor Day? The former West High star rushed for 163 yards and a career-high three touchdowns against a Big East opponent. His 6.3 yards a carry was more than any other running back in the game, and he's not even a starter for the Bulldogs.

I know, I know. It was one game. You're all saying, "Let's see how he does against Big Ten contender and nationally ranked Wisconsin next week."

Mathews is Cuervo. You know what I'm talking about? That smooth mix of fluid running style with a kick at the end that leaves tacklers dazed.

Mathews reminds me of another running back named Ryan. The Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant. Both are straight up runners that can deliver a blow to tacklers, or when you least expect it, juke right by them. Grant is taller, 6-foot-1, and bigger (218). Grant wasn't a highly-touted back out of Notre Dame, he was signed by the N.Y. Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2005. It took him 3 years, a trade and a few injuries from guys ahead of him on the Packers' depth chart before he proved he was a worthy running back.

Maybe Bakersfield's Ryan can do that same. But for now, it's just great to say he's one of our own.

When they flashed Ryans name(misspelled with two T's, which infuriates his Mom) full screen to highlight his plays during the game, I almost cried I was so proud. As cool as it is to see things like that, it's still odd to realize he is family.  His Mom was at the game and kept texting me for stats and info from TV that they couldn't get at the game. I was taking pix with the cell phone and sending them to her. We love to watch Ryan play and have looked forward to Football season since his youth days in Tehachapi. Next week is the home opener against Wisconsin..I already have butterflies!

Good luck to him, but I must admit I'm pusing for my own guys. I'm really looking forward to Christian Ponder replacing Drew Weatherford as the starting QB for the Seminoles this weekend.

Fresno State is going to be awesome this year. I think they even have a chance at crashing the BCS with one loss since their schedule is so tough. He really should be the feature back. He is by far the most explosive back they have and can do so many things better than the other players (block, catch, run between the tackles, turn the corner). Miller would make a good short yardage back or come in to give Mathews a blow. Mathews will be in the spotlight this week with Wisconsin coming down to Fresno. I hope he puts on a show.
