It's three days after the CIF State Wrestling Championship and I'm asking for a critique of our coverage of the two-day event, along with the two days leading up to it.
You can be as specific or as general as you want. Please share what you thought we did well, what you thought we missed and how we can improve on it for next year's coverage. Note: This critique isn't just for the Web, please include your thoughts on our print coverage. This will be the first of what I hope becomes a monthly critique for our sports section.
Just wanted to give a little background information before I discuss the topic. My wife, newborn son and I moved here from Gastonia, N.C., a suburb of Charlotte, in December. During my time in the area, I attended a few Charlotte Bobcats games and I'm still on the team's e-mail list. Charlotte was the home of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker's Heritage USA and of course the PTL Club, so needless to say the Bibles thump non-stop.
Anyway, I received this promotional e-mail from the Bobcats today with the subject line: Faith and Family Night. The Bobcats didn't come right and say what faith but there are three Christian performers singing before and after the game. This isn't the first time a professional sports team has had a promotion involving religious affiliation. The Atlanta Braves have had successful Faith and Family games for the past three years. With one exception, Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Focus on the Family was thrown out of -- OK, asked to leave -- a Braves' game for comments made during a pre-game rally regarding, "The Sins of Homosexuality." How far is too far? Would any of the minor league teams in Bakersfield have a promotion such as this? Would you support? Would you attend? I'll leave the rest up to you. |
