MakesThingsGo - > Makes Things Go -> New Users Click Here - Browsers
New Users Click Here - Browsers

So I know this is Jason's title, but I'm going to borrow it for today.  We've had a number of people, myself included, who are having some browser issues and so I thought we could all share our tips and tricks for getting the site up and running on our respective setups.  For myself, I use Firefox mostly with my Toshiba laptop running XP.  Runs really well and fast.  I've tried to access the site using my HTC Mogul running WinMo 6 and IE and Minimo kinda make the site unreadable.  Opera Mobile renders well and fast, but doesn't allow me to post.

So, what browser issues are you having?

I tried going back through some of the back issues of Website Q&A but nothing jumped out as specific to browsers.  Let's see if we can't all put down the big sticks for a bit and solve a few of these things.

I tried using Firefox on this site ,but it doesn't work.  It makes stuff that is cut and pasted look terrrible and won't display picutres.  So I stick with Windows for this site.  Also yesterday it wouldn't load a YouTube video.

Off topic but the title here cracks me up.  I can't look at it without thinking of Star Trek Generations.  Trekkies will understand.

Thanks for bringing this topic up Tom..I only have one computer so this is it as far as what works.  My IE is hard to navigate,  my AOL browser font is tiny and hard to read, and, as I mentioned ad nauseum..lol..Firefox won't let me post.

Tom, we sorta let the NUCH blog die a quiet death, but if you'd like to take it over, please let me know!  :)  Yay for community initiative!  ;)

First, let me reiterate that over the last couple weeks (this week included), we've been doing some behind-the-scenes server tuning since that last software upgrade, so that may account for any weekday morning sluggishness you've experienced lately.  If you see anything specifically weird, please let us know and I can let the developers in charge of the tuning know.

Bakomatic is supposed to support Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and Firefox 1 and 2 on the PC and Firefox 1 and 2 and Safari 3 on the Mac.

Nancy and Wayfarer and anyone else having issues with Firefox, please tell us what version you're using (and any info about your operating system) so we can test it out.

And Tom, unfortunately, we're not optimized for mobile browsers yet.

(And Wayfarer, email me with details re: the Youtube issue--was it that you were uploading a video and it didn't work?  Or you could get an embedded video to play?  Or something else?)

"nd Tom, unfortunately, we're not optimized for mobile browsers yet." Well I had a cuts and paste issue~but that apparently resolved itself. I can not cut and paste from my own comments as I write, my browers settings will not allow it~ any idea why that maybe? How's the font size? It's really small on my side the the "web".I am using version 2.0.0.12 firefox with scripting allowed,Windows XP.

Sage, I just tried to copy and paste my own comment from above into the comment composition box using Firefox, and had no problem using ctrl-c and ctrl-v.  Also, I'm noticing that the fonts look different in my Firefox and IE7 windows, but not size-wise (size is normal and readable).  So, unfortunately, that probably places the problem on your end.

It is somewhere in my browser settings~I will just take the time to go poke around and figure it out.Thanks.

I may take you up on it, Jason, though I'm having a bit of trouble keeping my own "Makes things go" blog going.  As for mobile, it seems like Chico and I are the ony ones using it and he's not having probems.

posted by TomW on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Nancy, I think we talked about it before, but the title of the blog (and my business, BTW) is a total Star Trek ripoff.

posted by jasonsperber on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Chico, what are you using for mobile browsing and commenting and what's your experience been like, compared to non-mobile user experience?

posted by TomW on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:23 PM

Sage, you can try resetting your font size by going to Tools ==> Options ==> Content.

Is it web wide or just the TBC site?

posted by NancyII on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Firefox won't even let me click into the comment box at all.  No cursor..no nuthin.  IE is clumsy with the copy and paste, it's not an issue with FF since it won't let me do anything but read, and I can't figure out the font on AOL.  If I make the font bigger it won't change the interent stuff but maked email HUGE.  As for the version of FF..I didn't download it just opened it in the browser window.  Maybe that's the problem with it.

Well, Tom, with MTG you have to come up with a topic each time, NUCH is just that open-thread-on-user-issues, the idea for which I got from you in the first place, so....  :)

Is your business also "Makes Things Go," or is it another ST reference?  OT, for scifi fans, hope you've checked out this great new blog called io9.com.

Tom..we may have but I have the memory of a flea at times so forgive me if I "spaced" it.  (booo..couldn't resist that.)

That episode was one of my favorites by the way.

Sage, I've also had cut and paste issues but only with images.  Usually I get a window telling me to use crtl-v rather than drag and drop.

posted by ChicoEsquela on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Have always had to sign on each time I post w/ PDA

Have to go in and  "config by trial and error" every now and then

The TREO worked much much better on here!

Gach..ahkecchh... That link won't open Jason.

posted by TomW on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Chico, sounds like you're just having an issue with the cookies.  If your browser is dumping them, maybe you can edit the settings on your browser.

posted by TomW on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Nancy, Jason got excited and dropped an extra comma in.  It's http://www.io9.com

Nancy, we'll have to test out your issues in Windows and see if we can replicate them.  This might have something to do with the Rich Text Editor.  I'm in Windows XP and in both IE 7 and in whatever the latest auto-downloaded FF update was I'm having no problems at all re: ability to copy and paste.  Anyone else having Nancy's problem?

Thanks, Chico.  Like I said, we're not optimized for mobile right now, but as more people in our market start using it, it'll make more sense, resource-wise, to flesh that out, we're just not there yet.

And Tom, yeah, drag-n-drop isn't really supported by the platform.

And sorry about the typo in that link, fixed it.  :)

Nancy, I loved that episode as well because the conceit was really cool.  If you've been watching the show "Torchwood" the conceit is somewhat similar but humans are the ones collecting alien technology.

I've tried almost every permutation at one time or the other. Browser configs, cahce's, cookies, scripts, WML & HML, BB, WAP, MICRO IE,  MS POCKET IE, EMBEDDED MEDIA SUPPORTS, etc.

If I were smart I'd write the sh*t down cause when it  "don't work no more" I redneck it (go in and start changin sh*t around) and I ferget "whut worked"!

But, I'm a disorganized kinda feller.

Them cows got better sense.

(They have a hard time typing though-even "two fingered" - ha!)

Well, Jason, if no one tried to break the site, you'd never know where the weak spots are.  :)

posted by ChicoEsquela on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:40 PM

Its a black box to me anyways

I tried to get a red cover for it though

posted by TomW on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:41 PM

Chico, I opted for the Mogul over the Treo or Blackberry since I couldn't get my fat thumbs to work either of those.

posted by jasonsperber on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Hey, Tom, we love it when you all tell us what's wrong--that means you're actually using the site!  :)

And what's the old developer's saying?  "It's not a bug, it's a feature"?  Heh.

posted by ChicoEsquela on Feb 25, 2008 at 12:54 PM

I type purty good with these (thumbs)  ;=)

Hate the "Inteli-Type" thingy tho

Mine vacillates between the two now and then

Sometimes I even have to take battery out and reset. Start over.

Sure am glad we got all these "labor-saving" devices

Now I wast all me time "savin' labor"!

Wife hates PDA

I lay in bed -- she says "dammit, yer a bloggin' again!"

So she got a PC -- She actually got up and shut a winder once!  ;-)

Nancy ~ have you done any add ons for Firefox~there's a handy one called No Script that prevents sites running scripts unless you want then to run~I just say trust TBC and everything works okay. There is also a trust once feature that lets scripts run one time, handy if you are not sure the site is safe. There is another MacAfee site adviser and one called WOTS~ both tell you if a site is "safe" and WOTS allows community input.I bet you need to mess around in tools, browser options a bit.

Chico your so right about writing everything down. I had a little "accident" about a year ago and fried my desk top... I fixed it,but once up,those notes came in real handy for fine tuning all my programs. It is still a black box to me,full of small magical creatures that help me "surf"~but I am learning some of those creatures names.
