New Users Click Here and Open Thread

OK Folks, it's Monday morning and you've survived another weekend.  After last week, I figured I'd give a go to taking over the ill-fated New Users Click Here series and try to breathe a bit of life back into it.  As an added bonus, we'll also turn this into an open thread for everyone, meaning that you can pretty much talk about anything you want.  Have a story that you've been meaning to blog?  Post it here.  Have a problem with the blog?  That can go here as well.

As for me, I'm trying to figure out how to embed YouTube Videos in comments. I've seen it done but when I use the "embed" tag I end up displaying all the code, plus a few bits where the software picks URLs out.  So, if anyone can show me how that gets done or lemme know if it's unsupported, that would be great.

Happy Monday!

Went out the Alameda Antique Fair this weekend for the first time.  It's a giant antique swap meet held once a month on the old Alameda Naval Air Station airfield which is right across the bay from San Francisco.  If any of y'all are ever up here and want to go, drop me a line.  There's also a winery and a distillery nearby so if that's your bag, it'll make the trip that much more fun.

It was nice of you to take on the NUCH blog. Have fun with it!

That sounds interesting. My parents don't like San Francisco and the bay area, so they've never taken me around there, but I made it out to San Francisco for a school trip once and it was pretty cool. I came back with some nice pictures. It would be nice to go back up there someday and explore. Doubt that'll ever happen. Maybe I should just stay in California and go to school in the bay area. That could be interesting.

As for the blogs, I don't really have any problems right now. The one thing I hate right now is every time I log in it takes me to the last page I visited, whether it be a blog or a picture. But there's no way I can fix that unless I refresh the People page before logging in, I think. Ah, well. Nothing is perfect.

Robin, I ended up here when I went to Berkeley and never left.  I'm actually in Oakland, which I prefer to San Francisco, but it's nice to be able to pop over for a show or an exhibit.  There are a lot of amazing photo opportunities in the area as well, between the old buildings, the crazy people, the water, the bridges and the topography.

As for the log in, where would you like it to take you?

Oh yeah. "Crazy people." Eh....that brings back bad memories. One day while I was in San Francisco I was walking down the street with my friend to get some lunch, and while we were crossing the street a homeless guy passed me and touched my butt. I have never felt more disturbed in my life. I think he was aiming for my camera, which was in my front pocket, but thankfully that was hooked to my jeans. I don't see why it was necessary to touch me, though, unless he was trying to pick my back pocket. What a jerk. I felt like crying after that.

Well, I usually use the homepage with the comments, blogs, etc., to log in, and it would be nice if I could get it to go straight back to that page again.

I've been trying to figure out the sequence to embedding  YouTube vids here also.  So far no luck all I've been able to do is just post the web-address. Using the YouTube embed code just gives this result:

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TQ... name="wmode" value="transparent"></param>&l t;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TQ..." type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></obje ct>

So I guess if I want you to see the video I will have to post this:  http://youtube.com/watch?v=...   and hope you get directed to the video when you click the link.

If anyone has a handle on embedding YouTube vids here on the blog e-mail me with the answer!   THANKS!

Yeah, YouTube embedding in comments is unsupported by the platform, sorry!

And Robin, what you're experiencing is actually on purpose.  Cookies downloaded from our site to your computer remember where you were when you logged out, and return you there when you log back in.  If you don't like that, I can suggest two things--log out on the People page every time, or clear your cache every time.

And Tom, thanks for doing this.  I've sent you an email re: login info for the actually NUCH account so you can post there from now on!  Yay community!
