MakesThingsGo - > Makes Things Go -> Week off
Week off
So I was getting ready to put together something for this week and got stumped.  I'd love to get into putting together some very simple "how-to" posts, but most of them require pictures and frankly, with the sheetrock going up on the place I'm working on now, I don't really have a spot that I can dedicate for shooting them.

So this week, I'm putting up the rock and have a buddy coming out this weekend to help put on the lids.  Should be a good time if I don't kill myself.  Then I'll get to trim it out and hopefully be done with this beast.

Fire away with any questions on finish work or any other home repair question and I'll do my best to get you an answer.

How do you remove wax from a BRICK fire place harth? I have tried......ice cubes......heat.......and nothing has worked.
Is there a company, here in Bakersfied, that could help?

Also I need some leads on a good carpenter to cut and install baseboarding.

Thank you!

Hey Anny, I'm not recommending contractors in this column but others are free to.  Anyone?

As for removing stuff from brick, my experience is that brick is pretty unforgiving once it has something on it.  The best suggestion I've seen it to put a brown paper bag over the wax and then hold a hot iron or hair dryer above it to melt the wax.  The paper should absorb the wax.  If there is a lot of wax, be careful to only melt a bit at a time so that it doesn't begin to run.

An old rag or something like that would probably work too. I know that's how you get it out of carpet. Never tried to get it out of brick. I'm not very surprised that the ice didn't work.

Ice sounds good on a non-porous surface.  Brick is a beast though.  I've known people who wanted to paint brick and I've always said "Be really sure".
