Searching for a job while on the job?

Have you looked for a job while you're on the job?

Were you at work, while you were supposed to be performing tasks for your current employer? Or did you wait until you got home or otherwise out of the office, spending your own time on the search?

I started thinking about this when a recent survey crossed my desk. (Gotta love those surveys.)

This one said 75 percent of executives are comfortable looking for a new job while on their current employer's payroll. (Compared to 69 percent in a 2002 survey.) But the survey done by Accountemps does not differentiate between people who used work time to look for new work of their own time.

Does calling in sick to attend an interview count? I've pulled that one with success. The interviewer called me at work to tell me I got the job!

When I worked for a cheap born-out-of-wedlock (thought I was going to say "bastard," didn't you?) boss I left a folded paper showing a want ad page on my desk when I went home. Circled a few competitive jobs with red pen. Couldn't be missed. Later the next day, got told I am getting a raise. (Didn't last long, wasn't enough.)

I guess it depends on how many hours your putting in w/ your employer. I work for a tech company usually log in to the office around 6AM (ET) for about an hour from home, then head into the office and log back in around 8 am (ET) and work until 6ish including working during lunch. Plus working from home in the evening and weekends. So I can surf, read online, as long as my work is done, my projects are on track.
