Attention 5 million procrastinators

No excuses! The Franchise Tax Board has extended phone service hours for procrastinators. (My word, not that of the FTB!)

Call (800) 852-5711 for help in English and Spanish.

The hours:

• 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 12

• 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday, April 14

• 7 a.m. to midnight Tuesday, April 15

The state agency predicts about 5 million Californians will file their returns in the next few days, according to a press release.

This year was the first year in more than a decade that I had to fill out a state income tax form. (My last two states of residence, Texas and Washington, are income-tax free.) I was really surprised at how difficult the California form was — and that was once I finally figured out what form to use to stop them from collecting taxes on the income before I moved here. The whole adjustments worksheet thing was terrible, and the instructions very difficult to parse.

Maybe it's just because I'm used to the IRS and not to California. Do you longtimers also find the Form 540 more difficult than the 1040?
