Did you catch Jenny Shearer's report on a proposal to revitalize Oildale?

See it here.

Officials are exploring the creation of a redevelopment agency that could work on economic development issues in the area.

County Supervisor Mike Maggard, who is spearheading the effort, told Jenny, “Oildale has suffered from the lack of a vision or some game plan to improve itself since I was a boy growing up in Bakersfield."

What do you think? Is that true? Should Oildale change? Stay as it is?

I agree with the report. Oildale has some historical value, regardless of how checkered the town's past may be. The simple fact that Oildale has existed for a century has to mean something! I suggest that a Welcome to Oildale monument (or some sort of a sign) be constructed to welcome travelers into the community. The landscaping ideas are great as I feel most of this county's attention is spent in the west. Kern County, as well as the city of Bakersfield's, tax money comes from tax payers all throughout the region so why does it appear it's only being spent in certain ares? I propose that we spread the money around a little more evenly...

I suggest putting some nice benches along the sidewalk on North Chester, from Roberts Ln. to Norris Rd., so the hookers can sit down instead of walking all the time.

When my son was born we lived at 319 Washington.  The owner of the house lived next door and was the postmaster at the facility on Minner and the area was clean and well kept in those days.  North Chester was bustling with businesses along with the theater.  There was a Sail Thru Drive in (now an auto repair of some kind), dress shops, a department store numerous family drug stores and grocery stores.  The bad area was along the river and it got steadily better as it moves north.  Unfortunately, the Wash, Wilson, etc off Chester are now pretty shabby and the businesses got seedier and seedier.  The dress shops and department stores are gone.  The office Supply store now sells caskets for Mish.  Cottage Hospital IS Mish.

It has suffered from neglect so hopefully the redevelopment folks can help it become a decent place again.  As I noted earlier, Airport is already undergoing facelifts so may it will spread east.  Who knows?
