Who's working where
In preparation for Kern Life, our annual guide to life in Kern County, reporter Courtenay Edelhart was updating a list of top employers. Interesting reading. Here it is: Kern County’s Top Employers: Paramount Citrus 1,096** 2 comments from 2 users

A very smart reader pointed out what she thought might be an error in one of the numbers. Here's what she sent to me: "In looking at the 'who’s working where' blog, it intrigues me that San Joaquin Community Hospital would have 11,000 employees. Seems like Catholic Healthcare West would have more, since they run Memorial and both Mercy hospitals, but they’re listed at 2,952. Any idea why it works out that way, or could the numbers be faulty?" Excellent question. We checked it out, and the good folks at KEDC who create this list said there was indeed an error. So we corrected it on the list. San Joaquin Community Hospital has 1,100 employees, NOT 11,000. Oh, what a difference a zero makes! Thanks reader! — Christine Peterson posted by

Kern County Public Schools 27,000 58,153 jobs out of 102,108 are government-related. 56.9 percent....and yet, we hate government around heah in self-righteous Kern...damn taxes and all. 18,905 are agricultural or food-related...nearly 20 percent. How many are immigrants? Hmmmm? You know what kind of hole you'd dig in this economy on a crackdown of immigration? And only 3,300 in oil or the euphemistic "energy" industries...with the rest in healthcare, "logistics," insurance, or e-commerce. (Esparza). Not a pretty economic picture, all in all...
