Handshake or fist bump?

I was reading a USA Today story about an apparent increase in the fist bump in the workplace. Maybe you already know what that is — two people lightly tapping fists.

Are you kidding? People actually do this at work?

Apparently more men, especially those who are friends or acquintances outside the work world, find this acceptable, the USA Today story said.

Maybe ... but just don't expect me to have a good impresion if you give me a fist bump on a job interview.

Definitely not a girl thing, but maybe it should be, in order to avoid germs!

Fist bump? You mean terrorist jab. OK, I'm making fun of the idiot on FauxNews that said that.

posted by johnburnssucks on Jul 23, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Yup, anyone who does the fist bump is an al-Qaida supporter...

posted by bakonative on Jul 23, 2008 at 10:51 AM

So Howie is an al-Qaida supporter!

I thought the fist bump was soooo over years ago. Then a few months ago I was at Amestoy's (best neighborhood bar in town!) and this older fat guy was going around fist bumping people, saying "You da bomb! You da bomb!" Who knew Obama would make it cool again?

posted by Mountianman on Jul 23, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Fox news anchor E.D. Hill  paraphrased "Hezbollah-style fist jab" on air as "terrorist fist jab." Hill wasn't endorsing the phrase, but she failed to make clear that she was citing someone else's characterization. She apologized the next day, but of course, the libs wont report it that way, that would be the truth,,,,and it is old, and never really that cool, and Obama dosent make it any more cool, now, lets count the times Keith Olbermann has said stupid things on air, oh my, we dont have enough room!!!

posted by randomfactor on Jul 23, 2008 at 11:21 AM

So someone said it, and then she repeated it on national television.  Sounds to me like it doesn't matter whether it was someone else's characterization--she shouldn't have given the idiocy further publication.  It's like televising one of Shrub's speeches.  Bad enough the reporters have to hear it...

Oldermann apologizing again and again,

http://www.talkleft.com/sto...

well, you get the idea, I could post alot more, and these are just the times he DID apologize, he should start his show off every night with an apology of what he is about to say, then again his ratings are in the tank and always have been and always will be, people get that he is just a joke

If it was ever cool it certainly has lost that connotation. IMO.

Gee, a newsman who admits when he makes a mistake.  They're gonna toss Keith out of the club if he keeps that up.  CBS's phony-ing up the McBush interview?  "Everybody does it..."

You miss the point RF, the libs love to point the finger at FOX when they say something stupid, but never want to admit it when every other liberal news channel does it every day,,,,c'mon, lets be fair and balanced about this,

posted by ALICEN on Jul 23, 2008 at 12:32 PM

So, okay, I never knew it was cool to start with.  Heaven help me, another fad came along, left, arrived back to jab us all over anywhere, and here I am completely out of the loop -- again.  Oh, woe is me.  I wonder how I shall be able to continue to live, knowing how much I missed the first time around, and how much I missed the second time around.  It is gone again now, isn't it?  Oh, please tell me now.

Is  there anything nastier than the human hand?  I doubt it.

I think we should bring back the old fashioned head nod and curtsy.  That way I don't have to touch people who don't wash their hands.

posted by Mountianman on Jul 23, 2008 at 12:57 PM

I agree, Howard Hughes had it right,,,,,,don't touch my hand,,,,,

I'm still a firm beliver in you can tell a lot by a person's handshake.  But there is time where fist bumps are acceptable.

posted by NancyII on Jul 23, 2008 at 01:20 PM

I'm a firm handshaker and I mean really using hands and not fingertips.  I don't live in the Victorian age or a time when women were dainty fingertippers.  On the other hand, (no pun intended) I don't like bone crushers either.

I shake hands with clients at the completion of a program while I'm wishing them well.  Somehow a fist bump just doesn't seem to say it.

One quick clasp is all I can manage.  And that's under duress. (no pun intended)   Yeeeeew

I stopped worrying about contamination long ago.  I haven't had a cold in over two years and skipped the flu last year too.   With no flu shot.

I rarely get sick and when I do it's good old IBS or allergies acting up and not anything catching.  I had a co worker who fussed over handshakes but loved Walmart so I told him I didn't want to hear of him using a basket either there or at the grocery store.  When you think what those handles go through, a handshake is the least of the worries.

Nancy

I'm just getting over the worst cold I've had in years.  Everyone says that summer colds are the worst.  I'm a believer!

Everyone who gets this cold gets sick, sick, sick.

posted by Shwaine on Jul 23, 2008 at 01:31 PM

There's always hand sanitizer for those handshake willies Audrey. Just carry a little travel size one in your pocket or purse.

posted by AudreyB on Jul 23, 2008 at 01:34 PM

Pepperspray works best as a deterrant to getting your hand shaken.

posted by bakonative on Jul 23, 2008 at 02:53 PM

I was actually talking about Howie Mandel, not Howard Hughes earlier. But the fact remains, hands have germs. BUT, I still feel a good firm handshake is needed when introduced to someone. (and if I think the guy is really cute, I might just cover his hand and mine, with my left hand over our handshake. BWAAAAHHHAAAAAAAA

I use the fist bump at work. Especially with the students. Many want to shake hands. Keeps me from getting exotic viruses.

E.D. Hill is a babe. On a scale of one to ten, her legs are a nineteen.

The version I got is Howie popularized the fist bump because he is a germaphobe (sp?). He usually looks uncomfortable when a contestant on his show hugs him. Sometimes I'll say  (especially if I just saw the guy scatching his butt or something), "Excuse me for not shaking hands. I may be carrying a bug." A business environment will expect convention more than a college campus. Not a place for secret handshakes.

I've run across a few people who are very germ conscious (or paranoid). It's a wonder they're not inside a plastic bubble.

johburns: The avatar looks like a med student I used to date. She always insisted I examine her. That's why I don't go to female doctors---no self control. (It's a cross I gotta bear.)
