Store expansion pays off
The Bra Shoppe’s expansion gamble seems to be paying off. The southwest Bakersfield store at 600 Coffee Road sells custom lingerie to women who want underclothes tailored to their unique body shape and size, including many breast cancer survivors. In November, the shop moved from a 960-square-foot store to a 2,100-square-foot space in the same plaza. In September, the company opened a second location in Wilmington, N.C., run by the daughter of Bakersfield store owner Susan Pudiwitr. Expanding in a recession wasn’t a sign of optimism about the economy. “We had it all in the works before everything hit the fan,” Pudiwitr said. “But we’re doing fine.” — Courtenay Edelhart 16 comments from 6 users

I've had the pleasure of providing advertising services for Susan. Her success is no surprise. She gives good old fashioned great service, makes sure her customers are happy, and is a pleasure to work with. You go Susan! posted by

How in the world does 600 Coffee become South West Bakersfield? Not picken on you Money. It just seems as if TBC has to have a better way of describing a location. Just recently the location of a murder was described as South East Bakersfield. It happened virtually across California ave. From the Welfare office. I'd have to call that Central Bakersfield. I would describe 600 Coffee as Central Bakersfield possibly West Bakersfield But in no way would I associate it With South Bakersfield,
Thanks TK

My wife has shopped there for years. I recently pulled in there to buy her something for her birthday (real easy guys they keep all of her sizes in their database) parked where the shop was... and said to myself "holy crap. they are not here any more"... then I looked to the right (south) and there it was... the newer bigger building is much nicer... I always felt kind of "cramped up" in the old place. TK - I would agree with "west"... it's not considered "north west" because it is south of the river (100 ft or so)... maybe that is why it is referred to as "south west"?.... beats me !! posted by

Nancy, Yea, It just seems a bit confusing sometimes. But I am not blaming anybody. Just bringing up the subject. posted by

They probably labeled it in the southwest due to its proximity to Town&Country, CSUB and Seven Oaks... all of which are considered to be in the southwest. Of course, anything south of the river and west of 99 calls itself the southwest these days. posted by

I guess I picked up Central Bakersfield sometime in the past. Seemed pretty descriptive to me.

The geographical center of Bakersfield is Union and California. All street numbers begin there. Anything south of the river is..well..south. Since it's in the west quadrant it is still the Southwest. Anything north of the river and west of the freeway is the Northwest. Generally speaking, the river and 99 are the dividing points for description. It isn't that hard to figure out. Anything in the 01 zip code is considered central since that's the original zip and town. I ain't tho sthmart I just lived here alla my life..long before anything had a real description other than downtown, Oildale Southa town and EB.. With growth apparently comes confusion. posted by

Nancy, 01 is south of the river. If it is Central how can it be south, North, East or West. Union Doesn't turn to So. Union until Brundage. Same For Chester Ave. YO! Tell me where North Chester starts. posted by

I know where North Chester starts. I just finished a long blog explaining it and it blinked and disappeared. I misspoke about Californina being the center..it's Brundage and Union where numbering starts. That's where they get the disignation of EWNS in front of their names. posted by

Technically TK, Wible/Oak and Stockdale/Brundage split each other.... since we're splitting hairs and all. I do love how one can describe each corner on that intersection purely by the street names used at that point... Wible/Stockdale, Wible/Brundage, Oak/Brundage, Oak/Stockdale.
