Home Depot required to provide shelter to day workers
I heard reference to this situation yesterday. People congregate on YOUR property to wait for contractors to choose them for day labor and YOU are required to provide facilities for them? 51 comments from 15 users

Nancy, I don't believe it's all one-way. Stores can be required to provide bathroom facilities for the general public, so there's obviously some precedent. . It may not be the intention of the store to function as a labor union, but it's the nature of the business that day-labor will congregate there. That, in turn, will attract contractors who will patronize the store. I truly believe that, at bottom, providing such facilities will be a net plus for the store. Sounds like they're wanting to eat their cake and have it, too. . But then again, HomeDepot is basically a despicable firm, so I may be biased. posted by

Whether or not the store is "dispicable" to anyone is beside the point. Why doesn't this happen at Lowes? I don't include Osh because they don't do a lot of contractor business. Why is Home Depot being singled out? I certainly do feel that businesses should provide "facilities" to it's customers, I don't feel they should be required to provide shelter and "facilities" to the public in their parking lots. Many moons ago my Dad used to meet up with his oilfield crew to car pool to the rig. One of the places they met was at a place called Rays Steak House on the corner of Rosedale Highway and Pierce road...right about where Dennys is now. They waited til the crew was all there to go to work. Should the coffee shop have provided "facilities" for them? This all smacks of that "attractive nuisance" thing. If you have something that attracts people, no matter what it is, you have to accomodate them or protect them in some way. posted by

Thank goodness. We'll get a much better bill in 2009. . To all those Hispanic voters who wanted to see immigration reform: Note the number of Senators with (R) after their names who denied your Senators a vote on the issue and made you wait two more years. posted by

Nancy, *IS* Home Depot being "singled out"? Or is it *ALL* "big-box" building-supply stores. I'd be willing to bet on the latter. . Another example of how local government is trying to fix a local problem locally, and the big bad Federal government is trying to keep them from doing so. Thought conservatives had a problem with that kind of interference with "state's rights." ;) posted by

Whining about what looks to be immigrants again, but than is the usual. Perhaps if some of these unlucky guys were almost legal there would be a way to provide them full benefits, you know like some colleges do for athletes.

RF..so far all I've seen is about Home Depot. I'd be curious to see if Lowes or any of the others have had this situation. I have to go to work now so don't have time to check it out. If any of you find out today I'd be happy to see it. Otherwise...I'll see what I can find tonight. Redkern..as usual you never contribute anything to the discussion. I don't give a rats patootie who the people are ..YOU'RE the one making the distinction, not me. I'm asking if gov't has the right to force ANYONE to build facilities in their parking lot to accomodate people who are using it as a gathering place to seek work. I see you didn't bother to answer the question I asked about the oilfield workers in the 50's. I guess they didn't matter because they weren't immigrants. (at least as far as you know.) You just couldn't resist bringing Ryan into this could you? What a sad pathetic little creature you are. Try staying on topic for once and not making everything a race issue ..or about YOU. Sorry Jason...I'm sick of this little troll. posted by

To all those Hispanic voters who wanted to see immigration reform: Note the number of Senators with (R) after their names who denied your Senators a vote on the issue and made you wait two more years. And, you should also note the number of Senators with (D) after their names who denied your Senators a vote on the issue and made you wait two more years. Oh no, that would be fair and balanced. posted by

We Won! Now we can concentrate our resources on completing the Gringo/Grease Wall and dedicate the new adobe curtain on our Border. I can see the day before the Bush term when our President stands on the border to declare "Mr. Calderon, PUT UP THAT WALL"!!
Now if only Home Depot would get into the act, we would be pleased as pie. These "aliens" would no longer be the footballs they have become, but wait what would our local busybody ladies have to whine about over the back fence. Geez, if they only had they went o school and earned the minimum grades, their future would be assure sports, in swimming of course. That river is a great learning course! Oilfield workers in the 50's? In those days you were part of the problem, come to think of it you still are, but on the other side of the equation. posted by

The reason the other stores don't have day laborers hanging out is because they don't allow it. posted by

Hey the Russians are having trouble with Chinese immigrants, the Israelis are having trouble with the Palestinians in the land of a world economy, why not a consortium to build fences between bad neighboring countries, there is opportunity here. Oh and Hallibuton , I hear may have time on their work schedule after September.

Yeah, it just makes sense to make a wall that long, especially if it's really expensive and time consuming. There's no way people could still get over/under/through it either. posted by

Just got the numbers: fifteen D's voted against cloture. 37 Republicans voted against (which essentially was voting against the immigration bill.) . That's 77 percent of Republicans voting not to reform immigration, if you're counting. . As I said, we'll get a much better bill in 2009. posted by

The Great Wall of China, they have been protected to this day, so too will the Gringo/Greaser adobe curtain last for 10 thousand years and protect us from the evil hordes from the South.

It's simply easier for those in favor of slave labor from Mexico at taxpayer expense to call anyone opposed "racist." But America has a right to secure borders and a right to deport illegal aliens. The United States belongs to legitimate citizens of our nation, not Mexico or Mexicans. How long would those opposed to secure borders for America last in Mexico under that corrupt nation's laws.

Victor David Hanson’s book “Mexifornia” is available to any that are literate. How to watch California turn into a third world cesspool is something that has already happened in Los Angeles and is spreading like a cancer throughout our state. posted by

Sorry I pulled your chain Sam, but I am on your side we 100% Americans have to stand together, we can't let those subversives like Oldfool who want to replace the American staple "hot dogs "with those evil Tacos. I understand the 3rd world cesspool metaphor, and fear that if it ever becomes a reality the proceeds might be shipped to Kern, and have faced that problem once before.
Yes, we have to secure our Borders, if we do not they will last as long as the borders lasted for America's first inhabitants, you remember Sam, your ancestors, so you claim. posted by

I was just kidding, they should not be on the property. Earlier this year I was accosted by two of these grungy fellows. The jumped in my truck and when I got home, they jumped off and cut down my tree in the back yard. Than, they had the gall to ask for 100 dollars and remarked that my driveway was not up to par and if called the police, they would come back and make it look like new.

Here's a quick and easy way to disperse those day laborers. Some may consider this method a tad bit extreme, but it is an effective way to clear out that parking lot in nothing flat. posted by
