Parade Magizine on Fred Thompson
The question was asked..."Why the delay in Fred Thompson’s announcement that he’s running for President?" Response from Parade Mag. "The orchestrated suspense enhanced Thompson's popularity with many GOP primary voters. What's more, federal communications law requires broadcasters to give candidates equal time on public airwaves. If and when reruns of his Law and Order shows have to be pulled, Thompson, 64, and his co-stars will lose their residuals." 42 comments from 12 users

Did you listen to the report Tom? (edited) sounds like ALL the cast will lose the residuals from those shows while he's running for office. posted by

Whatever the reasons for delay it is certainly going to make things interesting when he does announce.

Politics isn't all about straight forward announcing...there's a lot of strategy involved in it too. I read once that Clinton held off on his original announcement and a lot of people didn't know who this fella out of Arkansas was. It served him well. Who knows? But one thing is sure...there will be some money lost when they pull those episodes. The upside is that they weill resume after the election (one result or anothr) and people will start getting their money again. Did you folks listen? Sam Waterson will be taking over as DA. Now THERE's an important role. Look where it took Fred. LOL. posted by

Thompson's wife is running the campaign, he's raising next-to-nothing (and may *STILL* be in trouble with the FEC) and once he *DOES* announce folks'll start thinking seriously about whether to elect yet another acting president, this one with cancer. . IIRC, the Parade column *ALSO* predicted that Lindsay Lohan was doing well, so look at their track record... posted by

RF..Last time you brought up the cancer thing I posted links about it. It's not an issue but you can bet once he gets serious, the left will be all over it. The left is pooh poohing right now because he hasn't declared..once he does it'll be "Katie bar the door." BTW..so much for her being a "trophy" wife. LOL. posted by

His lymphoma is "indolent." (One could draw comparisons with its host). That means it's moving very slowly, not that it's in remission. Of course, he could live 15 more years. Or be hit by John McCain's bus tomorrow, if it hasn't run out of gas. posted by

So to answer my own question, I think Jeri will hurt Fred's candidacy as long as she's showing up in photographs looking like a Hollywood starlet at the latest award show. As some commenter somewhere so inelegantly put it, Fred will never get the old crone vote that way. Neither will he get the vote of any woman who has ever been dumped for a younger model. It's not an insignificant demographic. Certainly not one Thompson can afford to ignore if he's serious about the winning the race. http://cernigsnewshog.blogs...

Presidential Material? You mean old?
How bout, does Jeri look like First Lady material?
The stories I have read, put Jeri as the head republican party girl before she ran into Fred. Those kind of stories will swift boat Fred even if they are only half true.
Remember, Fred is running for the right wing, evangelical, paleo republican vote. posted by

The 3-Million-Dollar Man? Per NBC's Joel Seidman, Fred Thompson's "testing the waters" committee must file with the IRS by tomorrow to reveal -- for the first time -- some of his fundraising efforts for "Friends of Fred Thompson, Inc.," the Nashville based "527" political organization he formed in early June. Though the filing will provide records for only one month of funds raised, plus a list of contributors, it will somewhat lift the veil of mystery of Thompson's fundraising abilities. Will the amount be able to stop the flow of bad news for Team Fred (which includes staff defections, questions about his abortion record, and attention to his wife's role in his campaign)? Maybe not. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reported last week that the tally will be around $3 million. The site won't load so I can't provide a link to the story..sorry. posted by

I freely admit I stole the "Thompson Twins" reference. Too good not to pass on, especially now that Senator Clinton is apparently being criticized for gasp--possessing cleavage. . Change? Nancy, there is not a position held by Thompson as a Republican white male that does not translate to "more of the same." Especially on Iraq, the number-one issue. He even seems to work as hard as Shrub, from descriptions of his past behavior in office. posted by

If Thompson runs, you can remove any accusations of "lack of experience" of Democratic candidates. As a matter of fact, that may be turned around and used against Thompson. I don't see having cancer as an issue. Remember, Reagan had it three times (and even shot once) and he kept coming back like some deranged, Alzheimer's-ridden Frankenstein's monster. posted by

Apparently Thompson's going to announce just after midnight on September 6. Why? So he can hide his campaign donations until January. Just what we need--another dishonest Republican. (But that's a bit redundant...) posted by

Dailykos..yup..now there's an unbiased source. LOL Actually I'm delighted with all the negative posts about Fred. To me, it means there's enough concern that you folks have to start with the slings and arrows. Up til now it's only been a little shushing around but now you'll get serious with the mud slinging. Long before the accusations about hiding the campaign fund being the reason he held off announcing, I posted what was given for his reasoning. It was told that he would declare after Labor Day to maxiimize the exposure of his announcement since people were vacationing, preparing for back to school, and no one would be really into politics til things settle down. Also it was noted that the contract with L&O has something to do with it. BUT...for the other side, hiding campaign funds while not being on an official campaign sounds a lot better. Keep digging Democrats...you're going to need all the ammo you can get. And I have faith in the fact that you will do your best. You'd better hope it's enough. :-) posted by

So let Thompson admit wrongdoing and pay the fines like everyone else did, Nancy. Or do you want a special exception for him, being a Republican and all?
