Cell Phone Spam
Lately it seems I'm getting a lot of cell phone messages from strange places. Aside form the political calls I've gotten, I had one the other day from a survey place. I yelled at the gal and demanded to know where she got my cell phone number from. She quickly apologized and said she would take my number off the call list. Yesterday I got one on voice mail from my bank about an ATT payment I had made on line. I have to wait until Monday to see if that one was legit. I've never had the bank call on that number before. What's going on with the cell phone thing? It's never been an issue until now. Anyone else having the telemarketing/spam problem? 8 comments from 6 users

Before the "do not call" mandate, my recorder was kept on day and night. The only unsolicited calls I receive of late are "vote for me" recordings, which are an annoyance but I'm willing to tolorate. Big difference between getting out a vote and selling junk. Some document transactions, such as warranties, have a tiny-print clause authorizing your number be used for telemarketing which you may unwittingly consent to. Best you can do is tell the unwelcome caller to take your number off whatever list, which they are supposed to do by law. posted by

I dropped all features with my house phone including caller ID so most of the time I don't answer it until the machine picks up and I see who's there. It's my cell phone that bothers me as I don't put that number down except for doctors and such. I'll be checking my bank on Monday to see if they really do have that number and why they would call it, if in fact they did. posted by

Nancy: Go to this website and enter your home and cell number. I did this a few months ago and I never get calls on my home or cell number.

I've heard of banks that have the option of enabling text message alerts to your cell phone, but never a voice mail alert. It's possible the bank has the wrong home number for you and the cell was the only number that worked, if it was indeed the bank calling. I've had that happen before because my home number has changed several times recently (took a while to find a number that had not been previously owned by someone the bill collectors were after), but my cell number has been the same for a decade.
