NancyII - > Things that interest ME -> Somethings up in Arvin
Somethings up in Arvin

Just got a call saying a helicoptor is circling south of Arvin and two highway patrol cars flew by with sirens blaring.  Anyone have a scanner?

Not that it won't hit the news if it's important but I'm nosy.

I hope no one is hurt.

Grandson said they were flying when they passed him on Commance.  He called to see if there was anything on the news.

Just read that the Tehachapi Train Station burned this morning.  That's a real shame.

I just got a Yahoo instant message about a chemical spill on I-5.  Maybe that's it.

posted by NancyII on Jun 13, 2008 at 01:16 PM

That was early this morning and Southbound I-5's already been opened according to Channel 23 on line Breaking News.  I can't see it being the hubub this late.

It's most likely going to be one of those things that never makes the news and leaves one wondering what the heck happened.  :-)

This is from 23's on line article about a woman in Bear Valley who has 180 dogs.  Anyone see anything wrong with this paragraph?

"Peck, who was married to actor Gregory Peck's son and has wrote screenplays for movies, said she loves her animals and will do whatever it takes to abide by the law. She said if there were better spay and neuter laws then she would not have to dedicate her life to rescue."

Helicopters, HW patrol, LE.  It must be another Arvin city council meeting.

Maybe someone got so excited that southbound I-5 was open, that they drove like an idiot and caused a wreck, thus closing the highway again, heh.

In all seriousness, if ever you're wondering what's happening on the freeways in California, check the CHP website: cad.chp.ca.gov/

It seems to be pretty much real-time information from the CHP dispatchers. You'll have to learn to read their codes, but it does let you know exactly what's happening on the roadways. It's a great website to access before hitting the roads (and while on the road if you have a laptop) to know just what's going on. If there's any long-term closures, they'll have a "Media Alert" entry you can look at.

As for right now, it looks like a vehicle went (fell?) into the center divider on southbound I5 shortly after 1pm around Fort Tejon, so my idiot theory might not be too far off base. If I'm reading the dispatch log correctly, the driver was out of the vehicle trying to flag down traffic, so creating a road hazard too. There's a second traffic hazard report just after 1pm near Fort Tejon about a vehicle broken down on "east ramp".

As for the dog lady, if that's the same gal that was on the news last night, she claims all the dogs she has are abandoned dogs that she has rescued, not a dog mega-pack created by her own lack of spaying and neutering. So that would explain her comment. She's basically saying she wouldn't have so many abandoned dogs to rescue if other people fixed their dogs. Animal control did say they've inspected the property several times and the dogs all seem to be tended for in terms of feeding and veterinary care (but perhaps not in human socialization). Most of the neighbor complaints seemed to be more about the sheer number of dogs and the nuissance that creates. Reminds me a bit of the uproar over Alpha Canine when it first started.

You missed the point.  My question wasn't about the dog lady, I just watched that on the Supervisors televised meeting, the question related to the paragraph structure..not the content.

Along with our recent brouhaha over errors on the blog.  The difference is, this is a news source.

Thanks Shwaine

Honestly, I got my yahoo "instant" message about the big chemical spill on I-5 just 20 minutes ago.  I should complain to Yahoo about it's  false advertising.

Audrey, so much for breaking news huh?  LOL.

Nancy, blame modern education for the sentence structure. Seems to be the popular thing to do.

We're making some calls on this now. Next time send an email to breakingnewsteam@bakersfield.com and we'll look into it for ya right away.

Davin, thanks for all your trouble, it's much appreciated.

Is it the incorrect use of the word wrote?

"Peck, who was married to actor Gregory Peck's son and has wrote screenplays for movies, said she loves her animals and will do whatever it takes to abide by the law. She said if there were better spay and neuter laws then she would not have to dedicate her life to rescue."
