Irshad Manji... Muslim feminist
When I turned Glenn Beck on this evening his show was half over and I missed the full interview of a woman named Irshad Manji author of "The Trouble With Islam Today." She is a Muslim reformist and a liberal feminist. This was the second time she had been on his show. I've never even heard of her let alone heard her speak but her intervielw tonight was really interesting so I went to her website to learn more about this movement of hers and there was a link to her first interview with Glenn Beck. Give it a listen... 8 comments from 6 users

I read her book when it came out Nancy and would heartily recommend it to anyone really interested in "The Trouble With Islam Today." But there are some who just don't like Glenn Beck and miss some really interesting interviews. I find him often too antic, but he does make some good points that deserve attention be paid.

Sam...Glenns antics are one of the reasons I watch him and listen to him on the radio. He openly admits he is a conservative but says he is also a thinker. He states he is no rocket scientist but is a thinker. He also freely admits that his show is entertainment with enlightenment and that's the part that grabs me. I honestly get sick of politics and the strident drum beating on either side. I'm tired of being beaten over the head with comments about how wrong we are all and how we act like sheep and we can't think for ourselves and on and on. For me at least, it's refreshing to have humor injected into the daily grind of our lives and in our wacky world. Glenn also admits to being ADDHD and is a high energy personality. I like that over the plodding, grinding rhetoric that is our wont when it comes to politics. Glenn impressed me very much during the elections when he told people to stop voting partisan and start voting for the person who can do the most for our country no matter what party they are affiliated with. He said he didn't care if the person had an R or a D after their name as long as they helped all of us. You're right about him having interesting interviews and he doesn't limit them to conservatives. Nor does he interrupt or talk over his guests. For the rest of you..watch the video and you'll see what I mean. This guest is a Liberal..listen to waht he says to her. It's great. posted by

Did you hear Glen lead up to her life story? She was supposed to fly to Canada and get married to her arranged husband and she moved somewhere else instead. She ended up becoming a rather popular political figure before she was found and started receiving death threats, etc? My God this woman has lived a life! posted by

Both women are speaking out with the same message, the only difference is that Manji was born into a family that fled the Muslim extremists into Canada when Manji was 4. Ali was born into a family that supported the extremist view.Ali had to flee on her own as a young girl when her family tried to force her into a marriage. That was an excellent video Nancy, glad you put it up. Ms. magazine named Manji the Feminist of the 21st Century. posted by

Let not forget, however, that Evangelical Christians are still the enemy. Keep thine eye on the ball, folks...

Manji stated that there were other Muslim women speaking out but she's the loudest. LOL. I'm not necessarily a feminist and I"m certainly not a Liberal, but I really like her style. Glenn will be her guest at the conference and I imagine he will cover it on his show. People can say what they like about Glenn but he is fair and had not problem bringing Manji back a second time because he valued what she had to say. As for his alcoholism...he openly admits being an alcoholic and addict in recovery. When he had Danny Bonaducci (sp?) on both his radio and his TV show, it was a hoot. They both shared war stories and how they got into recovery. Great stuff and an inspiration to addicted folks who are still struggling. posted by

Audrey..did you see both interviews? The second was a lot better because it was longer and she had a lot more to say. I didn't find Beck to be critical of Liberals but maybe we listened to it from a different perspective. I would love to see her speak in person..I'll bet she's even more dynamic. I can' t even imagine a world where women are so devalued so it's a pleasure to see someone trying to change things. I often think about the Shieks Of Araby type movies that made us all swoon thinking of that Persian prince who would sweep us off our feet and onto his white Arabian horse, whisk us off to his Casbah, when all the while the reality of womens lots in that world was far different than we imagined. Poor Rudolf Valentino..he's probably rolling in his grave thinking how his dashing romantic image ended up with women trying to escape that kind of life.
