I hate squirrels...

...but they sure do make for a good photographic opportunity.

These little punks are all over the place. Do you have squirrels? I can't stand them. They're constantly mating, and when they're not mating they're doing their mating call, which is a high-pitched squeak. They do it all day long, and they dig holes all over the pasture. Ugh...they're terrible.

Do squirrels really serve any purpose in this world? I don't see them doing any good things around here. When I was out taking pictures of them yesterday, I noticed that one squirrel was standing there grabbing grain from the foliage with its grimey little claws. Its mouth was full of grain, I'm sure, but I never got close enough to check.

Down with the squirrel population! ...Right?

P.S. This is last week's post. I couldn't get the pictures to load and the room was hot, so I gave up on posting. I'm sorry about that.

P.P.S. I had two finals to take last week and we had to clean for a bereavement at our house on Saturday. I kind of had a busy week. My apologies to the faithful PhotoBlogger readers!

Jennifer, if you're out there, I took your instructions that you posted a few weeks ago for uploading pictures on here, and I pasted them in the sidebar, so now anyone who asks how to post should be able to check the sidebar and no one else will have to explain it again. :)

I'm off to bed now. It will likely be a long while before I wake up and get back on the computer again. Au revoir!

When I had an apartment off Panorama a few years ago this squirrel would come through the hole in our patio fence and eat my herb plants.  Then he ate my tomatoes.  But you know what?  He was really cute, so I bought some nuts and sort of tamed him, and he would come hang out on my patio all day and and scamper around, and I just adored him.  The only regret I had about moving out of that apartment was leaving that squirrel.

No photos~ just memories.I am sure all creatures have a purpose, the squirrels job was to drive my father mad He had bought yet another apple orchard, this one with young trees, they loved the tender bark, and would kill a tree very quickly~ so that is how I learned to shoot, varmint hunting. He was proud of me when I could nail them square between the eyes. I felt a small pang of remorse each time, but as he explained those trees were my future. Turns out  I am a squirrel murder, that received no earthly reward. Father lost it all due to,well, being a farmer. LOL.

Squeak terrorists eat the roots from fillaree, etc. They are dug in. Better than NVA Regulars. Charlie had bamboo plumbing underground, they have a tunnel system that puts Houston to shame.

Shoot em at 50 yards, they all of a sudden appear @ 100. Start hitting them with 22 and all of a sudden they appear @ 200. Pull out reach out and touch 223 and they appear @ 300, 400......

Run yer cayuse across pasture at full gallop, hit hole and you'll cuss em for years.

But they are so dern cute! Flea, lice, plague, hunta virus ridden little terrorists.

The best poison to utilize is lead. Fast moving, accurately placed lead. In mass quantities.......

I love the tree squirrels but ground squirrels are vermin and should be eradicated.

The difference is about 10 to 20 feet, straight up.

Axe a tree.

I shoot the little bastards with a pellet gun from my kitchen window. There is something therapeutic about shooting a ground squirrel at a 100 yards. I like to kill them when they stand on their back feet and stand straight up with their heads high in the air. I aim center mass....................

posted by sagefever on May 20, 2008 at 07:23 AM

Gube~ my dad is smiling down,or it might be up (lol) at you~ your environs are where that orchard was...

posted by ChicoEsquela on May 20, 2008 at 07:55 AM

Gube, utilize the AU2 (gold coated) pellets -- especially the ballistic (pointed) tipped ones. 25% incr MV!

But then, if you are hitting center mass (standing squeak = MOA of about one inch)  @ 100 yards with pellet gun, I guess you dont  need help from me  ;=)

posted by gube on May 20, 2008 at 08:23 AM

Chico I use the super H point cal. .177 pellet......I said I aim center mass.......percentage? I would much rather use a 22 but my neighbors complain......

posted by ChicoEsquela on May 20, 2008 at 08:29 AM

Gube, use 22  "caps" (primer only). Won't make any more noise than yer spring operated pellet rifle.

I utilize whatevr is handy, from 17 HMR to 505 Gibbs. Neighbors never complain  ;=)

(they just go  "mooo")

My kid's idiots delight was taking a box of crackers to Central Park and feeding ducks and squirrels. It got to where they'd take the cracker from her hand. I can just imagine her trying to do this with all you squirrel haters gaggled together with firearms, and blowing them away.

I used to  "chum" with dry dog food.

Or shiny things

(like beer cans)  ;=)

Big squirrels in Pismo.  I told the ranger we usually just shoot these in Bakersfield.  This beaver got lost on Hwy.1 across from my place.

Very funny, guys. Great picture, Chico.

I don't have the heart to shoot squirrels, even though I live in the middle of nowhere and should be able to do it, because I love animals so much. They are cute, though. That's the problem. But they're all over the place. They drive me insane. I see them running across the driveway all throughout the day just to get to the other pasture...or back on the one they're living on. Dumb. "The grass is always greener on the other side." Apparently, that applies to the small animals, too. On the other hand, though, my two brothers have NO problem shooting the squirrels. While I do not want to do the shooting myself, I can stand there and watch my brothers do it.

When I was at CSUB one day last year, I was standing on campus and I noticed that the squirrels there have a reddish-orange tinge to them and look different. Are those the tree squirrels who only live in the city? Because I've never been exposed to city squirrels before...ha ha ha. I had no idea there was more than one kind of squirrel.

Oh, Cat, I'm sorry.

Woof, that little guy sure is a cutie -- even if he does have a stuffed squirrel in his mouth. Sigh. Ha ha. I love CALM. I haven't been there for a year, and before that I hadn't been there for many years.

Remember Private Joker in "Full Metal Jacket"?

The  "Duality of Man" (Mathew Modine with peace symbol on flack vest and  "Born to Kill" on helmet)??

I can be driving home from a day of killing (shooting) squirrels and go out of my way not to run over one with my truck.

Weird huh?

(I can almost hear Marine Corps Col telling me "you better get with the program son.....come over to the winning side..."

LOL!

Glad I've never killed a squirrel before. Ha ha ha. Very funny, Catpaw. I guess that means my cat will, though, won't it?

posted by ghostriter on May 20, 2008 at 02:44 PM

I can't stand the little buggers. That incessant squeak is enough to drive you bats, but they kill everything in the garden...except, of course, for the weeds. I lost six cherry trees and several grape vines to those vermin, and countless flowers. And the holes are terrible on horses. I like to put Alka Seltzer in the holes. The squirrels love it and it kills them. The pellet gun is fun too; reminds me of target practice w/ my dad. (***evil laugh***)

posted by robinislost on May 20, 2008 at 06:06 PM

I agree with you, Charlee. They eat everything. I've had them destroy precious vegetables in my garden, too.  A few days ago I saw one in my garden, except I haven't planted anything in it yet, and it was munching on something. I'm not sure if it was eating the weed or found something else delicious from the pomegranite tree. But those little punks drive me insane. That's a great idea about the Alka Seltzer. I hadn't heard that one before, but I may have to try it in the pasture...as long as the other animals don't get to it.

I heard squirrels will eat each other !!! yuk not sure if that is true ?

posted by ChicoEsquela on May 20, 2008 at 07:02 PM
They are cannibals. They drag their dead into their holes and eat them. I know. I've watched em for years.........

ChicoE I have to say,  that's it for me ! When driving, I will never make the effort to avoid one crossing the road  ! lol

one squirrel = cute and cuddly

ten squirrels = vermin

posted by robinislost on May 21, 2008 at 09:58 AM

You are so right, Audrey. We don't have just 10 squirrels, though. We have more like a thousand. Literally. They reproduce practically every day. It's ridiculous. I think my cat brings in the babies more often, but she brings in a good number of the fat, juicy squirrels, too. Thanks goodness for our lovely cat who loves to hunt. I can't wait until my kitten gets fixed and can go outside to hunt as well.

There are lots of grey tree squirrels up at the cabin.  I enjoy watching them.  The ground squirrels should all be eradicated.

Now Roy

The ground squirres would just learn to climb the trees.  :- )
