Printcasting demo on Sunday at Dagny's!

Wow.  Another week gone and printcasting is rolling.  I've met with public officials and the public library, bloggers, vloggers, and even a jogger.  We're definitely off the ground and flying.  If you haven't jumped in yet and would like to get together to walk through it, I'll be at Dagny's from noon to 2 on Sunday for a demo or two.  There will be schwag aplenty as well so come down to hang out with your fellow bloggers and pick up a pen.

There's a lot of news to relay as well.  Dan Pacheco, the founder of Printcasting, maintains a few blogs about printcasting on the PBS MediaShift Idea Lab site and on the Ning community dedicated to Printcasting.  One of our big announcements for this week is blogger ID badges.  This is a link from your blog that has a super-spiffy personalized image and a link to your Printcast.  More than that, b.com bloggers can add them to their blog.  If you've got a Printcast, let me know and we'll do a bunch of really intricate, super, um, codey-wodey stuff to make your badge appear on your blog.

If you tried Printcasting before and had any issues, this is the place to post them.  We've solved a lot of technical issues that were brought to our attention at the beginning of the open beta so if the water was too cold before, it may be just right now.

As always, the floor is open so feel free to ask questions and give feedback on your experiences.

Let's call this a blogger meetup too since we'll have a time and place.  Miss you guys.

If you see a woman with a paper bag over her head~ be nice to her...she wants a pen real bad! ;-)

Sunday is always a bad day for my bunch.  We  gather at one of our houses (rotating) around 10 every week for breakfast and it usually goes until ealy afternoon.

This week it's at my house so I know I won't make Dagneys.

Dang it. I'd love to see what Dagny's is like. I have got to get my hands on some of that Printcasting schwag so I can show it off! :)

Today was the first day of spring. I'm going to spend my whole weekend planting seeds and getting my garden going for the summer, so no cool Printcasting schwag for Robin. (Of course, I wouldn't be able to go anyhow, but I won't go there.) =D

I apologize for going silent on your printcasting, but I have had so many other things on my mind and in my life of late.

Comments as they pertain to my latest:

http://www.printcasting.com...

I understand the difficulty of programming the service to decide when to use the user's own formatting or to insert some of your own, but in cases where the feeds appear to come with no formatting or only default formatting, I suggest either automatic indentation of each paragraph, or automatic insertion of a small amount of whitespace between paragraphs (or both).

Doing so would give it a more magazine-y feel.

In the article continuation blocks (see page 4 for a good example, containing "Love, Thr Fruit of a Truly Spiritual Heart"), it is really necessary to program the service to finish printing the entire article.  If you envision people actually printing these (a safe assumption if you are offering PDF downloads), it makes no sense for a reader to read an interesting article, hit a dead end on the continuation page, and be forced to go to the Internet to read the end.  (How long do these tinyurls last, anyway?  Not forever, I'll bet.)

The continuation blocks still have no paragraph separation whatsoever; the paragraphs simply run together as continuous text.

And, I understand that poetry poses a tough and unique challenge to automation that I am happy to provide.  ;)

On the positive side, I see that the front page formatting is getting more intelligent and creative.  The issue above was very pretty.

Apollo, thanks again for your comments.  As you can see, the product we rolled out a few weeks ago is practically a generation behind the product we have now.  We're gonna keep working on these things and we'll get there.

There a few possible solutions for the issues you're describing including giving people the ability to directly edit the text before printing (which has BIG +s and BIG minuses) or working on the software's interpretation of different symbols.  As you can imagine, we're trying to find a way to make the product both simple and fully customizable and making trade-offs where we have to.

You also make a great point about the tinyurl site and I'll bring that up to the crew.

Your work is really challenging from an automation point of view and I for one love that.  Hopefully I'll see you tomorrow and if not, I'll keep you posted on the latest news and updates.

Robin, we'll get you some schwag somehow.  I'll run it out to the ranch myself I have to.  :)

While I'm here with people, I'll also be monitoring the blog so if you have any questions, let me know.

Hey, Tom, did anyone from the blogs show up? How about Sage?

How did the demo go? Details! :)

I'm thinking about taking some of my blog posts and just throwing them together so I can say I have my own Printcasting magazine and add the widget to my blog until I can get enough content together to make a real magazine. The next thing they need to do is create an app for Facebook so we can actually show off our magazines on Facebook, too. What do you think?

Is it OK if I don't connect my B.com blog to Printcasting? I know everyone else is doing it, but my blog posts are so lame and boring that I can't imagine anyone needing or wanting to use them. Don't try defending my blog posts, either. They're just not magazine material, you know?

Robin,  I'll write something up in a day or so, but things went much differently than I expected and yet they went very well.  I love the idea of a Facebook app.  And yeah, I understand not wanting to connect your b.com to printcasting.  I think only  two of my b.com blogs are.  You could create a new blog here though that is strictly for Printcasting.  That would be awesome.

That's a good idea! I linked my blog~ but I only want certain posts in  Printcast...I wish I could have made it today~ but fate had other plans for me..and so did Mr.Sage..he is sick and "needs" me....
