Chad Vegas believes it might be a good idea for only xians to hold public office in CA.

Ok, Mr Vegas is only a school board member and thus has no real power to enforce his proposal, but this is a very dangerous idea.  Vegas stated on the Inga Barks talk show this morning that he believes atheists cannot uphold the Ca oath of office and that it might be a good idea if a religious test was imposed (that is, that only xians should be allowed to hold public offices).

Now he did state that he also believes that, for example, Utah could only allow mormons to hold office, and that in the current political environment, a religious test would probably not be allowed by the courts.  Still ...

Chad Vegas may not be rabidly pushing religion in the schools all the time, and he may be promoting some positive changes, but how bad could it become with someone who so misunderstands religious freedom and the basis of our laws being in charge of the education of children?

Of (comparatively) secondary importance, someone who claims that the bible does not in anyway conflict with the US or Ca Constitutions has, at best, a severe educational problem (like not being able to read).

Wow.

He needs to be removed from office before he hurts himself with a dull object (his brain).

Honestly, why can't his defenders see through this two faced public "servant".    The only thing he serves is his own self interest.

In my insignificant, uninteresting and probably singular opinion: Mr. Vegas is a complete idiot. He is proof that religious people should be excluded from public office. What a complete moron. I will personally pay for his relocation to the mountains of Pakistan where he can live in a mud hut, squatting over a dead goat, chanting his religious psycho crap. If this clown ever tries to run for a significant public office, I'll run against him and push him back to the dark ages where he belongs. This clown wouldn't last 5 minutes in a debate with my 6 year old.

Other than that, I have no strong opinions on this subject.

Oooh...my spam code was OTNFU. Wish I could do something with that...

Chad Vegas deserves to be pounded into the ground like a tent stake and left for the ants to feast on.

I read his Community Voices Opinion letter this morning. I am sure he is a nice man,a  good Sheppard to his flock  and would never want to force me into a camp or anything....He is however wrong about some very basic American ideas.

Thanks for the back-up JBS. Thought I would be left hanging on this one. Seems there are very few people who realize how dangerous a "man" like Vegas is.

H8, I spent a year of my life with nuts like Vegas.  I can smell them coming.

An atheist does not have to lie when taking the CA Oath of Office. The CA Oath of Office does not mention God. The CA Oath of Office states

"I, ___________________________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter.

"And I do further swear (or affirm) that I do not advocate, nor am I a member of any party or organization, political or other- wise, that now advocates the overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of California by force or violence or other unlawful means; that within the five years immediately preceding the taking of this oath (or affirmation) I have not been a member of any party or organization, political or other-wise, that advocated the overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of California by force or violence or other unlawful means except as follows:

(If no affiliations, write in the words "No Exceptions") and that during such time as I hold the office of

______________________________________________ I will not advocate nor become (name of office) a member of any party or organization, political or otherwise, that advocates the overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of California by force or violence or other unlawful means."

And no other oath, declaration, or test, shall be required as a qualification for any public office or employment.

I just read the article about Vegas running for reelection. He says that he thinks drug sniffing dogs will help reduce gang activity. I guess he hasn't spent too much time at upper middle class highschools. Those kids are the ones who have the money to buy drugs, and most stoners are not gang members. There are many  who come from middle class families, which are headed by church attending parents.

We should start an anti-Vegas campaign.  Who cares who might run against him, just don't vote for Vegas.

We'll run Audrey against him. Vegas will flee the state the following day!

Chad Vegas needs to read the Constitution.  I'm so tired of this guy and his efforts to turn Bakersfield into a theocratic dictatorship.  Anyone who's so blatantly prejudicial should step down from public office.  He's on the school board- what message does it send to his Jewish, Muslim, or secular students when he pipes up with this crap?  Does he even think about the impact his statements might have on the children he's supposed to be thinking about?

posted by Helga3412 on Jul 29, 2008 at 12:02 AM

Inga and Vegas, now there is a pair to draw to. Someone please spare us both of them.  And to think Vegas taught school for several years.  I agree with the others, he needs to read the Constitution because he just doesn't have a clue.  It is time for him to leave the school board and go back to his flock.

posted by randomfactor on Jul 29, 2008 at 07:41 AM

Folks need to settle on two candidates *OTHER* than Vegas and concentrate their votes on those two to get this idiot off the KHSD board.

.

To answer your question, Possummomma, Chad Vegas has studied hard how not to think.

posted by antiextremism on Jul 29, 2008 at 08:01 AM

God is the only avenue this guy has to stoke his enormous ego. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for us, he is too dumb to do any real damage. Enjoy the school board while you can Chad, that's as far as your gonna get.

Voting "anyone but Vegas" isn't good enough.  They always try to clone more candidates like him who would vote as a theocratic block, like Ken Mettler or the unsuccessful Jim Parks.  It is usually safe to vote the Bakersfield Californian endorsements.  To put it another way, Vegas never runs alone.

 Vote for this guy.

• The Rev. Chuck Cournyea, 59, senior minister at UnityChurch of Bakersfield.

He cited his love for children, desire to change a board he sees as

encumbered by the “religious political agendas” of some candidates

and the need to support “a great staff and a great superintendent” as reasons to run.

Cournyea made headlines last November when he stepped down as

president of the Interfaith Alliance of Kern County following the trustees’

decision to place “In God We Trust” posters in district classrooms.

The Interfaith Alliance opposed the posters.

At the time, Cournyea said he resented the divisions the issue had

created in the community.

“I have no agenda other than advocating for adaptable, balanced, common-

sense policies for both the academic and vocational aspects of education,”

Cournyea said. “The people of Kern County are ready for change to take place.”

He was an adjunct instructor at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale,

Fla., from 1988 to 1989.

Audrey, great response in the Californian to the high speed train question.

Roger's answer, in contrast, was practically incoherent.

He'd get killed in this town if he ran. One of the many Savage/O'Reilly/Limbaugh listeners would go to his church and shoot it up.

I'd like to see an organized campaign to support the Californian's picks for KHSD board, sight unseen.   Splitting the anti-Vegas vote is a route to four more years of theocracy.

Thanks TSM

We were asked for our responses to that question 5 months ago.  Since then the gas crisis has elevated to a critical level.  I wish I had emphasized more how a high speed rail would reduce our need on foreign oil.

Regarding Roger's comment:  can you picture a high-speed train going through the Tehachapi Loop?

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Jul 29, 2008 at 08:41 AM

Vegas' attempt to justify his views in the editorial page yesterday was weak at best. What I got out of it was that he blamed liberals and those that don't attend church. In other words, because of a lack of logical reasoning in his argument, he resorted to playing the victim and attempted to make liberals "the enemy." He truly showed us that he only represents a portion of the community.

This guy is the perfect example of someone getting elected to push thier own agenda.  Not to mention that this guy is a stuipd high school trustee.  God (no pun intended)

This guy is an idiot.  And people that support him are idiots.  Instead of this guy doing what he can to get our kids a better education, he is more worried about thier spiritual upbringing.

One of the main reasons we have seperation of church and state is because it is the familes responsibilty to teach values and/or religion.  Not the government.  Least us not forget that many of our founding fathers came to this country because the Church of England was basically the law that you had to follow.

I'm glad someone so dense is making decisions on the education of americans.

I'd take the trip. If my insurance company covers such high risk activities.

Vegas' attempt to justify his views in the editorial page yesterday was weak at best.

It was also arrogant as hell. He's no more a man of God than RF is.

James 3:14-16 is appropriate for Vegas:

14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind.

Proverbs, Chapter 29:

23 Arrogance will bring your downfall, but if you are humble, you will be respected.

It was encouraging to see most were for high speed rail, the regular train is a great ride especially through the valley.

I will support the Californians pick~ but I like The Rev. Chuck Cournyea so far.

posted by AudreyB on Jul 29, 2008 at 08:51 AM

He started off his comments by letting us know what a great guy HIS DAD was.  As though that has anything to do with HIM.   Then he meandered around the topic of why his refusal to obey his oath of office wasn't really a refusal to obey his oath of office.  Very fuzzy thinking there.   Then he finished up with his usual flourish by bashing liberals and atheists.

I wish Jason would turn his head for a moment so I could say what I really think about Mr Vague s.  It would probably catch the blog on fire!

I couldn't believe someone would actually hate Americans (that he doesn't agree with) so much that he would want to kill. Actually with some of the stuff that is said around here about liberals, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. What is most troubling to me is that some of these guys think they believe in Freedom.

While you're at it, don't forget about the others of Vegas' ilk serving on the KHSD board who support and vote with him on his Book-Banning, Creationism, God-In-Schools and other extremist religious agenda.

Then there's the City Council with the likes of God Poster Girl Jacquie Sullivan...

And they support Ann Barnett and her extremist evangelist shenannigans and voting machine debacle.

Somebody's responsible for electing these people to their respective offices.

If it isn't you, then who is it that wants these wackos running things and marks their names on ballots?

As long as things are going well for them in the most powerful and prosperous nation in Earth's history, I don't think a  high percentage of them will do anything that seriously endangers their prosperity (say taking actions which would likely land them in jail).  Unfortunately there is a good history of even comparatively minor problems prompting attempts to impose their interpretations of what's right through force.

Worse, not only will this probably not hurt his political life, it will likely increase his standing with his "demographic" and certainly boost his reputation with his day job.

This is not a good sign of our society.
