Outdoorsy things to do in Kern this spring

I worked on a story today about spring being an excellent time to visit one of the several nature preserves around Kern County. These sorts of places don't advertise so it's likely many people haven't heard of them. They're no trip to Disneyland but a great way to get out and enjoy the weather and the natural surroundings.

Any other off-the-beat-path ideas for how to enjoy spring?

I can think of several but I won't repeat them. What makes them enjoyable is the fact people don't know about them and overrun them with trash and noise.

The Frazier Park area has a ton of outdoorsy things to do, from OHV'ing at Hungry Valley, wildflowers poppin' up at Gorman to mountain biking, hiking, day hike trails on Mt. Pinos.  Still a bit of snow left in spots.  Native trout fishing opening up on Lockwood, San Guillermo & Piru Creeks; more fishing at Pyramid & Quail Lakes.

New class, field studies, tour programs are available thru Frazier Mountain WILD .  See www.shopoutdoors.com/wild.html .  shopoutdoors also has a bunch of other local info on it.
