If you build it they will come, or will they?
Even though corn doesn't line the outfield at Sam Lynn ballpark, it’s still one of baseballs “Field of Dreams”. Sam Lynn Ballpark holds the California League single game attendance record at 8,175, set on July 3rd, 1995. Sam Lynn used to have an operating digital display above the left field wall that showed pitch speeds and player stats. In 2002, then-prospect Josh Hamilton hit an opposite field homerun that sent the ball smashing into the front of the display (a-la "The Natural"), rendering it permanently inoperable. Today the display still remains over left field, but is covered with a banner advertising the team's website. 1 comments from 1 users

TNF: I'm in agreement with you. I have been wracking my brain to try to find a way to keep Sam Lynn yet make it such that people want to attend. The "facing west" problem is a problem not only for the players but for the fans as well. We have attended a few times, but boy, that glare in the summer, and virtually no shade in the stands. The beer and hot dogs are great :-) The price is right. Which of course is another hurdle - the price of stuff. It would have to go up a bit but I think it needs to remain nominal for we retired folks on a fixed income!!! Our daughter and her family (husband and 2 boys!) are quite literally baseball nuts!! There is not a book they don't have nor a card, nor memorabilia. Over the summer we were all in the Chicago area so daughter and family went to a game at Wrigley Field. The boys were thrilled! Got hats, T-shirts and such. I believe Wrigley is another "old gal" that will be replaced shortly with a bright shiny new stadium - and of course cost more for patrons. I'm wondering if Bakersfield could have a contest for the architects of our fair city to re-design Sam Lynn. If we're thinking of spending millions why not spend said millions to upgrade what we already have? Do some sprucing up of the old gal.
