Total recall: What are your holiday plans?
A once-promising holiday toy is now being recalled for containing the "date-rape drug" chemical.

This follows in a long line of recent recalls. In toys alone, the Consumer Product Safety Commission conducted 61 recalls this year so far, compared to 40 recalls last year.

Can anything be trusted anymore?

In the United States, the toy goes by the name Aqua Dots, distributed by Toronto-based Spin Master Toys, according to the Associated Press. They are called Bindeez in Australia, where they were named toy of the year at an industry function earlier this year.

Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

Toy industry execs were apparently counting on this product to help boost the holiday shopping season.

And as we near Thanksgiving, the inevitable Black Friday and the toy-buying season, do you worry about lead poisoning or other contamination of holiday gifts? Are you planning to boycott toys made in China?

Some stores are being proactive about comforting consumer fears. Toys "R" Us has devoted part of its site to the recalls as well as posting recall notices on "safety boards" in its stores.

To check up on recent recalls, check out the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site.

What are your holiday plans?

Wasn't it obvious everyone, from the manufacturer to the distributor to the stores and to the people that bought them for their kids, what would happen? The date rape drug is a nice twist, though.

Maybe we need to bring our manufacturing of items back to the USA.  There are pleanty of people out of work and lots of illegals who would do the work that the out of work Americans don't want to do.

Why do that?  Big corporations make a bigger profit when they can offload jobs overseas and sell us toxic products in return, and that means big stock options for them.  You some kind of pinko?

Welllllllllllllllllll............................ ...........pink is my favorite colour !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although, I have noticed stock options have been taking a dump lately!

That's OK.  When the corporate types finish back-dating them, it'll turn out they made a killing after all.

Actually, my holiday plans for gifts are usually educational items. Books & DVD's of:  the wonders of the world, blue pacific, these united states. Also challenging games.  My grandkids love that stuff.  Also baseball/football cards, gear, stuff!

We agree again, WP.  Books for kids!  (I'm buying my kid Euros, though...)

The puppy in my profile is the REAL witter pitters!  She was my darlin' for 14 years :-)  Her registered name was Jaye Cie Whitney - she was named after the parts catalogue J.C. Whitney............my husband is a mechanic!

Change of subject but what the hell - maybe I'll get another for Christmas so it is in keeping with the topic! HA!

Books~ and I am going back to an old family tradition, that will earn me the disgust of all my small friends~ a bag containing apples, oranges and walnuts. Got a bag each Christmas as a child ~ hated them, but ate it all.

Totally agree Sage.  I have been doing that since my oldest grandson (age 13) was a baby. That is also what my daughter got a lot of!

Growing up we got one thing we wanted and anything else was what we needed.  We were dirt poor and just didn't know it! BUT - we were happy!!!  Unlike the kids today who demand and get anything they want.

I have already sworn off Chinese products. As for Christmas, it is just no fun when you are broke. I am dreading it personally.
