Meet Shrek, the overweight spokesogre for preventing childhood obesity
Talk about an unlikely representative. He eats earwax!

Shrek — the lovable, smelly, bright green ogre from the swamp — and his crew are now speaking out against childhood obesity. Unveiled today, the campaign comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Ad Council and DreamWorks Animation, according to the Associated Press.

I love in the public service announcement when Donkey says, "Let's shake that booty like never before!" to which the chorus responds, "Be a playah!" The games are also cute.

Shrek isn't new to promotion, but usually this jolly green giant markets candy, not fruits and veggies.

Maybe the marketing department has had a change of heart.

Here's a rundown of some of the not-so-wholesome food that bears Shrek's lovely mug:
Shrek & Donkey Do-It-Yourself Cake Decoration
Betty Crocker Shrek Fruit Snacks
Shrek Cupcake and Decorating Kit
Shrek Eyes Edible Hard Decorations
Shrek Popcorn Buckets
Kellogg's Shrek Multi-Grain Cereal with Marshmallows
Baskin-Robbins Shrek's Swirl Sherbet (not to mention Fiona's Fairytale and Puss In Boots Chocolate Mousse ice cream)
Baskin-Robbins Shrek Sundae with candy worms
Pillsbury's Ogre Cherry with Ogre Icing, Shrek Wildberry with Ogre Icing and Chocolate Sludge with Chocolate Icing Toaster Strudels
Shrek 2 Pillsbury Blueberry Waffle Sticks with Dippin' Cups with Green Swamp Syrup
Shrek 2 Pop Secret "ogre green" popcorn
Pillsbury Ready to Bake! Shrek 2 Sugar Cookie Kits
Shrek Kudos bars
Shrek's Swampy M&Ms
Shrek's Swampy Sour Skittles
Shrek Yoplait Go-Gurt
Shrek Twinkies with green filling
Plus, there's all the cereal and fast food kid's meals with Shrek toys inside.

Using cartoon characters to sell junk food has come under fire in recent years, much like cartoons did with cigarettes.

I wonder if this means that Shrek will now strictly be pro-health and ditch the unhealthy products? Could this signal an end to seeing Sponge Bob and Mickey Mouse in the grocery aisles too?

I don't know, Emily.  I saw Sponge Bob on a bag of spinach before.  Come to think of it, it was shortly before the e coli outbreak...

Thinking more on this, I really dislike it.  If Shrek is going to endorse a healthy lifestyle and endorse Diabetes Bites, isn't that just setting kids up for confusion?  I'm all for using these characters for good instead of evil, but this doesn't really feel like he's doing good.  It feels more like Shrek got busted for something and is doing community service.

BTW, for anyone who hasn't seen the video here from dateline, you really should watch it. It's in a link about halfway down the page: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id...
