Stephen Coal Bear?
Doing some searching across the web today I found that CALM is having a name this bear contest. http://www.calmzoo.org/&nbs... It's a dollar donation to enter, and there seems to be a condition that they want children to enter to win, supported of course by their parents.
I'm a long time supporter of CALM and think they do amazing work. This contest screams out for a bit of culture jamming. I called earlier and they seem to want to keep the contest small and local, but a Stephen Colbert contest could bring serious money into a great facility. What do you all think? Should we make a bring push to turn this contest into a nationwide effort to get the bear named "Stephen Coal Bear"? It could turn a 10,000 dollar fundraiser into a 100,000 dollar or more thing. 15 comments from 9 users

It's a long Friday and I'm nursing a bad knee so I'm off the crew for now. Just thought this might be a fun idea for a good cause.

Who knows, Queet? He might be for burning coal. Just thought it would be fun to name a Black Bear "Coal Bear". Besides, as I understand, Stephen Colbert is a HUGE fan of bears.

Lemme see what I can do then. The hitch may be that they are expecting children to enter with their parents blessing. I think they also are anticipating a local response. My feeling though is you don't argue with money.

TomW, I think you forgot, some people just don't have a sense of humor or maybe they just don't get Colbert....True, his new wrist band called "WRISTSTRONG" with proceeds going for the Yellow Ribbon Fund is a sure sign of how this could help get charitable contributions for CALM, sounds like that's not possible if its just for kids. But it would be worth the push. My oldest said, Yogi.....I didn't even know she knew who he was....oh wait....I know, it's because I call her BooBoo. posted by

Tom~ great idea! Even if you for some reason do not think the guys funny (?) that is a great name and could get us some national attention not surrounding bad air,sludge or any negative pick one!

My son, who watches "Colbert Report" all the time, thinks this is a great idea! He says that Colbert has *lent* his name to a number of things:
Also, whenever Colbert does his "threat down" section where he lists the top five threats to the country, the number one threat is always BEARS (not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing in trying to get Colbert's support for naming a bear after him). If CALM wouldn't mind getting mentioned a lot (possibly) with there being a possible tie in to funds being raised for their program, and if Colbert would do it, I'd say "go for it."

Perhaps if it was proposed as an opportunity to train a young (and impressionable) bear to work undercover within the bear community, so that we may be able to track and prepare for the relentless killing machines' plans for world domination, he may go for it.

Thanks, everyone. There are a few logistical things we might need to do to make it happen. One biggie I noticed is that CALM doesn't have an online store or online donations. It would be huge if they had that as far as getting national attention. If there are any web monkeys out there who could set something like that up, lemme know.
