Does anyone know anything about probate?

Hey everyone, I am seeking some information, My grandfather just passed away, he has no will that I know of, his property (house, furniture, etc) is going through probate, I was informed that an administrator will come in and take notes on all property and its estimated value for probate court. I have some property within the home, I was told by a neighbor that if my property is within the home, I can lose it to the probate courts, if my grandfather has any debts, because its in his home and the administator will consider it his.

I was wanting to know if any one could shed some light on my situation? Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated, I was told it would just be easier to get it out before the adminstartor got there but its alot of stuff I got stored there and really have no other place to put it.

Get your stuff out quickly if at all possible.  I went through this a while back with my dad and it's a big pain.  Ours took a while to complete.  The property and stuff is essentially "seized" to determine the value of the estate so it can be distributed fairly among the beneficiaries.  If you want to keep your stuff I would suggest moving quickly.  Good luck!

Tragic.  Another lesson.  A family trust and a will are the only way to go. Put all property in the trust along with bank accounts.

I've already been through the probate nightmare. If there's a way to milk the estate some bureaucrat or lawyer will try to do it. My kid is over 18 now. All assests will be transferred to her name and she'll be added to our bank accounts. Been told that might put her in a higher tax bracket, but it won't be as much as the bottom-feeders will steal from her.

Family or private trust, make a will no matter how basic it is. If someone is ...Err... 'on their way out' and they want to change their will after being visited by an organization, clergy, old friend... whatever, be sure that you have proof of competency.

A situation like this destroyed what remained of my relatives.
