The morning paper

Early mornings I pour the java to better putter from chore to chore getting the space properly prepped for my mid-afternoon iced-coffee extravaganza that allows me to keep going until a reasonable hour before hitting the horizontal button for the night. In between I peruse online news sources for interesting stories (well interesting to me) to pad my brain while the flavored caffeine kicks in. This morning I hit the trifecta in the on-line edition of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The First story finds news that student fees at all CSUs might go up  by 20% to help cover an $813 million budget cut for the coming year.

CSU Chancellor Charles Reed said he will also ask for layoffs, unpaid furloughs and a range of other measures Tuesday to save the university system $584 million.

"It's nothing short of a mega-meltdown financially," Reed said.

If you interested in more of the gory details you can check the story out at sfgate.com.

The next stories are pure fun, because the characters are so strong.

Charles Barkley on the golf course. By the time he reached the No. 6 tee, Charles Barkley realized the gallery was in danger. So, when he spotted two spectators obliviously wandering down an adjacent cart path - about 100 yards away, left of the fairway, outside the ropes - Barkley offered a loud, friendly warning.

2009 Our Culture Has Lost Its Damned Mind Perpetual Trophy.

I am not normally a huge sports story person....but that was one well written story. Weird, tragic, bizarre story~ but well written.

I didn't get my morning paper--AGAIN!!!  I am sooooo tired of walking out there and not having my paper there.  It's probably been 10 times in the last 4 months, and every time I call (which is about 1/2 the time) they always bring out another one.  Within a couple of hours.  Still--my best paper-reading time is before the kids wake up in the morning.  After they wake up it's: read a sentence, "mama...mama....," read a sentence, "mama, mama, mama!"  I'm THIS close to cancelling my subscription since with the money I would save I could get decent cable, since right now we have the bargain-basement cable.  I don't know what it is about MY house that is so confusing for my delivery driver, since I always see papers at my two neighbors' houses.  Anyway, one more time and I'm dropping my subscription, and I'm calling and telling them why.  I don't need this kind of frustration when I can get the news online for free anyway.

Sorry Adam--had to rant to someone, and my husband's already gone to work.  ; )

10-4 on the cable ~Cat~...we have just the basic also...but when our paper doesn't come--I just get on line and notify TBC...and they come right on out--fast---but I understand about your ' quite time ' to read the paper....

People who don't just read the paper online are killing the earth!

Think about it - how many trees are cut for those morning papers?  How much fuel is polluted into the atmosphere to deliver each and every one of them?  Considering the liberal slant of today's media, I'm surprised they still print papers-oh wait, advertising money, the Almighty Dollars-nevermind!

student fees at all CSUs might go up  by 20%
God forbid they quit giving their president's $30k/year raises.  I drove through CSUB the other day and I can say one thing - they sure keep the grass clean and clipped!  Probably the most pristine of the CSU campuses.  I even saw the Shafter van with it's community service "volunteers" helping to clean it up.  Yeah, talk about budget priorities - just throw more of the burden on the students!

CSU Chancellor Charles Reed said he will also ask for layoffs, unpaid furloughs and a range of other measures Tuesday to save the university system $584 million.
Good!  Vanderhoef of UC Davis once asked us to "share the pain"...I think this should apply too.  It's a shame they don't cut the salaries of top execs, all of whom I'm sure have found equally invalid excuses as to why they should have to take furlough and why they should get a raise. The UC is a joke, it's about time it went broke.

That's okay, Cat! Rant away!!!!

Lately, we must have gotten a new delivery person for the fish wrap. It is actually on my doorstep every morning this past month, and always before 5:30am. Sorry to hear of your woes on the delivery train. My person rocks, which makes for a very happy sweetie pie in the morning who must read the paper with her iced-coffee to avoid the grumpies all day long.

We're about set to ditch the the satellite/cable world altogether. Netflix beckons like a siren song of harmony to our ears and with the Internet I get all the news my eyes can tolerate.

Ciao! Mmmm, hungry now. Must find doughnuts.

Mayfield is a loser.  Intriguing story sure, but he has no excuses for testing positive for meth.  He tried to say at first that the positive result was from his allergy meds and a prescription he was taking.  BS my friend.  Go crawl under a rock somewhere so you won't endanger the other clean drivers on the track doing 180 MPH around you.  "Don't go away mad... just go away".  Thanks Motley Crue!
