Five Minute Idling Rule For Trucks
Law Now Applies to all TrucksBeginning January 1, 2008, in the State of California, all trucks above 5 tons gross weight will no longer be allowed to idle longer than 5 minutes unless they are stuck in traffic. There were already state laws against excessive idling but an important exception for sleeper berth trucks no longer exists. Up until now many long distance drivers could stop almost anywhere and leave their engines idling all night for heating or air conditioning while they slept. Alternatives available for cab comfort include auxiliary power or heating units, if certain standards are met, and there are also several new truck stops that provide electrical hookups to over nighters. A concern I have is the blatant disregard for the laws by the drivers. I am happy to see a hefty fine for this violation. I would suggest the city and county apply similar actions to the illegal parking of these rigs.
