Q: Some time ago, documentarians were filming kit foxes living in the southern part of the Cal State Bakersfield campus. It was reported that they were telling the story of how the mom kit fox taught her pups to cross Camino Media to forage in the movie theater trash. What became of the documentary? I watch a lot of Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, etc., and haven’t seen it. — Jane Gardner A: “Hollywood Fox” by wildlife filmmaker Rob Whitehair aired...

Q: What’s being built or fixed at the southwest corner of Panama Lane & Gosford? There is lots of activity going on there with road construction vehicles and earth movers. Thanks. — Andrea Sanchez A: The Stine Canal is being moved underground to accommodate future commercial development near the intersection, according to the city of Bakersfield’s Planning Department. Panama and Gosford Retail LLC, owns the land and plans to build 580,940 square feet of retail...

Q: As a regular user of the Kern River Bike Path, I have noticed over the last several months that many of the larger trees along the river bed appear to be quite dead, with many fallen tree trunks and large branches. Is there some disease affecting these trees?  I know that some trees are in winter dormancy, but many appear to truly be dead. What’s up? — Bob Smith A: It’s true, some trees along the bike path are dead but there’s several explanations for why....

Q: I have faithfully followed the rules on no-burn days even though I do not agree with it all.  I was talking to a friend about it recently and she told me that on no-burn days you could still burn Duraflame-type processed logs.  I thought no-burn meant no burning at all? Can you burn Duraflame-type logs on no-burn days? If so I have missed out on a cozy fire on many cold nights. Thanks, — Diana Collins A: According to Brenda Turner, spokeswoman for the San Joaquin...

I am a concerned parent and I write to you because my son's safety is at risk here. I do not have a vehicle so I rely on the GET bus, but I am risking my son's safety because he is not buckled in any type of safety seat. I know I am not the only mom who takes her baby on the bus because I constantly see other moms trying to hold on to their child with all their might. Is there some crazy law preventing child safety when using the public transportation system? — Christy Shipley...

Q: What is the purpose of that five-story tall, triangle-shaped tower located behind Sam’s Club off Young Street near Harris Road?  It almost looks like a tower for communications. It’s located in the back of a lot behind what looks like a very high security building with lots of cameras and no identifying signs on Young Street.  The whole structure and building looks very secret and ominous. What business or government entity is this and what do they do in...

Q: I’ve been seeing more and more white Express Transit buses in Bakersfield.  Is Express Transit a Bakersfield company? Who are they transporting and where? — David Dooley A: Express Transit Inc. is a company formed in Bakersfield in 2007, said the company’s office and human resources supervisor, Anita Aldaco. It receives state money to transport Kern County adults with developmental disabilities from their home to programs run by organizations including BARC...

Q: Is TBC going to have the “Race to Victory” fantasy NASCAR game they had last year? That was fun!!! Thanks, Elizabeth Moore A: While several hundred people played Race To Victory last year, we were unable to secure a sponsor to help cover our costs. And with no sponsor prospects this season, I opted not to revive the game this year. Tough times require us to focus on critical site features. I know that decision is a disappointment to many, including myself (I was one of...

Q: Is it only me, or are the signals in town really screwed up? With all the talk of particulates in the air, no fireplace burn days, and how bad diesel trucks are for our air quality, why do I have to stop at a red light on Ming Avenue at the Marketplace when there are no cars pulling out onto Ming Avenue from the Marketplace? Why don’t those low traffic intersections only trip when cars are there? And why don’t we have green signals after a green arrow to turn left when...

Q: We’re all told not to drink the water in Mexico, but how are crops imported from Mexico safe if they are irrigated with the water we are told not to drink? I refused to buy a cucumber from Mexico for this reason. — Bea Bunten A: With the recent salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter, we all may be a bit wary of where our food comes from these days, and how it’s grown and processed. In terms of food from Mexico, or from any other country that’s sold...
