What can I do about my neighbor's overflowing trash cans? Is a Sam's Club coming to Renfro and Rosedale? What happened to the trees near the Ben Austin Senior Center? Why no flag at Hart Park? How would you describe Bakersfield's “spirituality”? Who is going to save the Highway 99 oleanders? What's up with DirectTV and local hi-def channels? Is it illegal to turn without signaling? Is Bass Pro Shops still coming to town? Where's the dirt from the 178/Fairfax highway exchange going? What are Bakersfield's quality of life laws?
Q: Can you tell me anything about the so-called "quality of life" laws that we have here in Bakersfield? I would like to know what they are and how we get them enforced.
Thank you, Shirley Bodirsky A: Enforcing those laws generally falls to the city’s Code Enfrorcement Office. To report a complaint, call 326-3712. Code enforcement is all about making sure that properties are kept up, said Randy Fidler, the city’s chief code enforcement officer. That means taking care of weeds and abandoned vehicles, limiting dogs to three per house, and especially securing abandoned buildings. “If we have a property owner who isn’t keeping the house up, we have to do something about it if we get the complaint,” Fidler said. “We’re going to get the process rolling. Within 45 days, you’re going to see something take place.” If it’s an emergency, such as an unsecured pool, the department can take action faster. 3 comments from 2 users

Lady you are wasting your time. Code enforcement is totally impotent. They will not help you! As for barking dogs, the BPD animal control is a waste of time. The best thing you can do is to move to a city that really cares about quality of life, Bakersfield does not!

I think that the real question hear is why isn't our community taking the necessary steps to enforce this Code? Does any one know what those steps are? Any suggestions? Has anyone lived in a city that did enforce this type of code? I don't live in the city limits, does the county have a similar code? I agree, we need some major help in this area! posted by

JenFord you are wasting you time. I have fought city hall for three years. Its just one excuse after another. My neighborhood is starting to look like East Bakersfield and we can get no help. Our fearless leaders have no backbone to make the changes. Watch the Council sometime om TV and you will see a mutual admiration society. They are afraid of City Manager Tandy and his cabal!
