When will the divider island project on Old River Road be done?

Q.: I am just wondering when the city government will continue their unfinished divider island project on Old River Road.
— Arman Domingo

A.: Medians are generally built when the second side of the street is developed, said Marian Shaw, a civil engineer for Bakersfield.

When the first developer builds on one side, he or she pays a median fee. The developer on the other side of the road then builds the median and gets the fee to defray half the costs.

Sometimes it’s more complicated than that, Shaw said. Two developments may not overlap entirely, or there could be other complications.

For any part of Old River Road south of Pacheco Road, the medians are waiting on development, she said.
