Where do I find smart sprinklers?
Question:
In the July 14 issue of The Californian, you published an article titled “Smart sprinklers halt water waste.” The article touted the use of lawn sprinkler controllers that make use of ground moisture sensors to determine when it was necessary to water. This is all well and good, but when trying to find such sensors (and controllers), I was unable to find anything meant for residential use other than a possible product produced by RainBird. The other sensors found were meant for industrial/agricultural use and cost anywhere up to $2,000 per sensor, which would be a bit much for typical residential use. I didn’t pursue the research beyond that point because it appeared that products and information about products for residential use is quite skimpy to non-existent. Do you know of a source of information and prices about products suitable for residential use? — Everett Greene, Ridgecrest
Answer: Mary Ann Dickinson, executive director of the California Urban Water Conservation Council, suggests you call HydroPoint Data Systems Inc. The Petaluma, Calif.-based company makes “smart” sprinklers called WeatherTRAK. According to Dickinson, the company is a leader in this field. You can reach HydroPoint at (800) 362-8774. The company’s Web site (www.hydropoint.com) includes pricing information. To learn more about “smart” sprinklers, also known as weather-based irrigation controllers, visit the conservation council’s Web site at www.cuwcc.org. 1 comments from 1 users

Also check with your local nursery or turf supply. NOT the big box stores, although they may have them. Go to the Garden Party network and email them..they'll be able to tell you. Or wait til next Sat morning and call then on their radio show at AM 1410. If you call you get freebies like nutra packs. You can't get better advice on gardening information. Dan Monji and Jere Green are the hosts of the show.
