Why do we have so many handicapped parking spaces? Why can't farmers put up signs telling us what crops are being grown? What's that building behind PF Chang's? Are we getting a restaurant out on 178 near Masterson? Can I drive here on a foreign license? Why is the fire department wasting taxpayer money? What's the new Beach Park skate park going to look like? What are those black cables you see taped across the street? What are those flashing blue lights you can see from the bluffs? What's being built on the corner of Alfred Harrell and 178? What to do about the cars that go boom
Q: I live in Bakersfield. I was born and raised here. I will be 65 years old in April so I have seen a lot of changes. I want to know if there is a law or what is required to keep cars from going down the road with their boom boxes or whatever you want to call them, the bass turned up so loud that you can’t hear a siren coming. I was almost killed by a fire engine because the guy next to me had it so loud that when the signal turned green I usually hesitate to make sure nobody else pulls out. Then I went ahead thinking it was my turn and all of a sudden there is a blaring fire engine just coming to the left of me. I never heard a siren. 28 comments from 18 users

Once again, yeah, there's a law, but how the heck can you enforce it? Take down the license plate and call the cops? I live on a semi busy interesection. Some cars go by with their "bass" so loud it nearly rattles the pictures off the wall. But, I can live with it. In Chicago I lived across the street from commerical and transit railroad tracks. Whew, a couple loud cars going by isn't as bad as train traffic sounds. My point again though is, how the heck can you enforce the law? posted by

It is not only those that you can here from the neighbor's that live 4-5 houses away but there should be something about being in your own vehicle and all of a sudden not be able to hear the news or music that you choose for yourself. The fact that somebody wants to spend that much money on thier car tunes is impressive but it does not give them the right (with all of the windows up in both of our cars) that I can not speak or be spoken to by a passenger because of thier killer stereo. If a person wants to blast thier own ears ( and I have been known to play a certain song a bit loud) - a little common courtesy is mandatory. I would never invade another's space by over-volumnizing, I think it is rude. posted by

There may be a law but there is no way it is going to be enforced unless there is a cop sitting next to you or the one blasting. Even then the chances are iffy. When MY car is bouncing on it's own tires and my whole car vibrating, I come very close to lethal road rage. Then ther are the idiots who cruise our neighborhood (we live by a high school) one of these days I'm going to throw out spike strips!!!!

I still think I'm going to invest in hearing aid stock, I'll be rich in 10-15 years. I've actually walked up to one of these idiots and asked why he thought we wanted to share in his crappy taste in music. Kid had no answer, but the look on his face you'd think I'd threatened his life... Can anyone explain why it's ALWAYS rap, or hip-hop, never classic rock or country? posted by

Because the ones that play rap or hip-hop wouldn't know classic, rock, country or classic rock if it jumped up and bit them. IMO it is also, or can be, an intimidation factor. Most will not confront people in a car that are playing "kill the cop" music" posted by

Nowhere near as bad as the Harley guys with the open exhaust. Heard one at night on Panorama, and heard him all the way down to Manor, and then heard him revving it up going down Manor, and I was at River Blvd. My stereo is loud (ok, it's insanely loud), but I couldn't hear it that far away. Witter, serious lmao at you differentiating between RAP and HIP-HOP. Just funny. As for the types of music, other types don't emphasize bass, which is what you hear. It is what they call omni-directional, which means can be heard everywhere, whereas midrange and highs, are uni-directional, which means you only hear it when you are in front of speaker. Country, some if it hits. Ok, Big and Rich hits real hard, lol. Rock, eh. Well, I use to crank Judas Priest, Europe, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Others were usually not bottom heavy. I use to use the beginning of "Flashdance" for my SPL readings back in the day before test CD's. posted by

It's a matter of civilized good manners and consideration for others. Obviously some are not raised with these values and society suffers the consequences. posted by

I caught one of the boys with one of those boom box set ups in his little truck once. He was taking me somewhere and kicked that sucker in and those woofers behind the seat about knocked me into the dash. I hate those stupid things. In a semi you're pretty much above it all, but when you are more at ground level they are so loud and vibratory, they make you wonder what the hell it is. He had more in that stupid system than the truck was worth. When I made him sell it he was able to buy gasoline for a month! (it was a while back) posted by

I like it when it's so loud the car rattling is louder then the actual music. And the car dosent have a paint job, it has a sheet for a widow, and a rag for a gas cap. I love that sh!t. posted by

Gotta love the mentality it takes to put a $5000 stereo system in a $500 car. I have my little bit of fun with them when I pull up and crank up the Dodger game as loud as it will go. I'll roll down the window, lean over and turn it down just a notch and yell "Damn, that Vin Scully's good!" and return the volume to full...THAT will get you looks... posted by

"Gotta love the mentality it takes to put a $5000 stereo system in a $500 car." When I was 20 years old and lived down south, I worked with a guy who had similar priorities with his engine. The car was a wreck, all primer gray. It had no keyhole on the driver's side door; you opened the door by reaching inside the open window. His passenger seat was a milk crate. I hope he eventually figured out what was limiting his dating prospects. Under the hood, however, was every boy-thing performance enhancer you could possibly put on a Chevrolet V8. He would brag about the thousands of dollars he spent and the thousand more that we was planning to spend. With all that money to spend, he would have been smarter to start off with decent-looking 1970 Camaro. But what do I know... posted by

Lanabuford, shooting your tires out was a joke. I would actually smash you tail lights with a baseball bat and let the cops pull you over and then ticket you for the loud music. Go look at your car. (Just having fun with ya) posted by

Back in the day (late 80's-early 90's I had the stereo & the cops did bust us for playing it loud, I know I have the tickets to prove it lol! 1 trick I learned back then was the little ole cb in my car did wonders on that rap-crap music. turn the cb on to channel 31 lower side-band, kick the switches on the little box under the dash & whistle into the mic. When you did that you would hear the most god awful screach out of their stereo..... then silence. Loved doing that to people with cheap stereos. We could usually be spotted with the 2-3 foot floresent light taped on the antenna that would light up when we keyed up. I wish I still had that radio with the box, but the box is not allowed by the FCC then or now lol. posted by

I have been getting old for quite a while now and the longer I live the less tollerent I become for noise in general. As I am writing this, my neighbor is pressure washing his never used RV. Yesterday the gardners were playing dueling leaf blowers and down the street they ride around in an electric golf cart with a booming stereo. I wonder why people find it necessary to impose upon others? By D Way, my Harley makes the most tranquil, mello, exaust note you will ever hear! It is a sound of beauty! posted by
