Why can't farmers put up signs telling us what crops are being grown?

Q: In (a recent Californian), there was a wonderful article titled “The Joys of Local Produce.” Since Kern County is so proud of its produce, wouldn’t it be nice if our local farmers put up signs telling people what crops are being grown in the many farms along the roads and freeways?
Would be so informative and educational to our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
— Jessie Roefer
P.S. Some of our wineries have signs showing which grapes are being grown!!

A: Local Kiwanis Club member Ray Bass said signs naming crops were posted in fields along Highways 99, 58, 46 and 65 in the 1950s or early 1960s.
But “a big problem soon developed; the farmers change the crops and the signs were no longer appropriate and we just couldn’t manage the changing of the signs to match the current crop,” Bass wrote in an e-mail. “Some of the farmers made the (sign) changes for us but it wasn't long before the idea was forgotten and it died out.”
He goes on to say that he , too, would like to see the signs again but it would require a way to keep them current.

Row crops are especially troublesome, as they can change several times in a season. The signs are also not cheap, and then there have been some notorious incidents of trespassing and theft of signs. Not to mention the actual product in the field.

OK Ill bite.. ..I used to run around with one of the local ag people..he had a map of every farm in the valley..it was his job to montior the crops through growing season..he also had what crops were being grown where on that map..

why no signs?? its simple they dont want you too know whats being grown if its not obvious to you already....infact if its a poplular item they will plant it inside an area with cow corn or something tall and thick surrounding it to hide it from the public..most farmers have it down to the day the crops are ready for harvest..the closer it gets the closer they police the areas ..

so if ya feel like pluckin off some freebie veges beware a truck with binoculars might be hidden in the trees..its not only the stealing part but the trespassing that hits ya in the wallet..much cheaper to wait untill its in the store..

Hwy 101 in Monterey County has great signs identifying their local farms's crops.  They would be nice to emulate.

The signs would also invite theft. People would use the signs to plan that week's family meals... There is already enough theft in the ag fields, the signs would only make some feel they were in the fruit and vege section at the local Albertson's...
