Q: Some time ago, documentarians were filming kit foxes living in the southern part of the Cal State Bakersfield campus. It was reported that they were telling the story of how the mom kit fox taught her pups to cross Camino Media to forage in the movie theater trash.
What became of the documentary? I watch a lot of Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, etc., and haven’t seen it.

A: “Hollywood Fox” by wildlife filmmaker Rob Whitehair aired on Animal Planet in August 2006.
Whitehair said it played in more than 60 countries. Overseas it was known as “Kit Fox: An American Tale.” It was released by British production company Parthenon Entertainment.
Filmed in 2004, the documentary follows two young kit foxes, a brother and sister, under the care of their grandmother kit fox in the urban jungle of Bakersfield.
“It’s amazing to see them living in an urban environment,” Whitehair said. “They’re so small, no bigger than a house cat, and it’s amazing to me why they were thriving. I wanted to know why.”
Whitehair said if he were to return to Bakersfield for another shoot, he’d film the native burrowing owls and kangaroo rats.
Parthenon has not released “Hollywood Fox” on DVD, he said. The company did not reply to our request for more information.
The Bakersfield office of the Cal State Stanislaus Endangered Species Recovery Program, which studies local kit foxes, holds a few copies that are available to the public, said research ecologist Brian Cypher. Call 835-7810 for more information.
