How do I recycle the plastic bags my paper comes in?
Q: Is there a way to recycle the plastic bags that my paper comes in? I do have a few uses for the bags, but not enough to use them up and I hate to throw them away. Can the paper carrier reuse them?
–– Kim Bean

A: There are several options for recycling these bags.

Vons grocery stores will accept them as part of their plastic bag recycling program.

In fact, the store will take just about any plastic bag, including those from other grocery stores, department stores and the dry cleaner, according to Marlyn Denter, a spokeswoman for the company.

The Kern County Food Bank will also accept the bags your newspaper comes in. The organization can use them to distribute food.

It is important to note that plastic bags are not accepted in the city or county blue recycling bins or at the drop-off recycling centers around town. Also, Cristi Tallman, The Californian’s circulation manager, said it would be too difficult for newspaper carriers to reuse the bags, therefore they cannot accept them at this time.

Use them to put your shoes in while traveling so they don't mess up your suitcase.  Use them for worn underwear on that same trip.  Use them for food you don't want in your disposal and take them to the dumpster.  Use them for litter bags in your car.  I find a ton of uses for them but eventually they go in the trash.

I really like the food bank suggestion ...helping a good cause while getting rid of the bags.  If they take them, check with churces that have a food distribution program, I'll bet they can use them too.

Doesn't Save Mart also take plastic bags?  I've seen a place in front of the one on Hageman Rd that allows people to drop off grocery bags.   Also, how could it be too difficult for the Californian to reuse the bags?
