Q: Several months back, The Californian reported that a new racetrack was going to be built along Enos Lane, near I-5.  I have not since heard anything about this venture and am wondering what the status is. — Dan Brito Plans call for a half-mile oval that will become Kern County’s new home to NASCAR. It will be located just west of where Enos Lane (Highway 43) intersects with Interstate 5. Marion Collins, former owner of Mesa Marin, says: “We have a hearing on...

The Grove Dining & Shopping will include a Vallarta Market and a Longs Drugs as well as six smaller retail buildings, Pharr said. The project is under environmental review. Q: How do I make the ice cream man stop driving up and down the street? Here in the southeast (South H Street and Fairview), four to five ice cream trucks drive up and down every evening no more than a half-hour apart. The weekends are worse with no less than 15 ice cream men on any Saturday. The worst part is having to listen to the high-pitched, annoying music every half-hour. Is there any way to make this stop? — Chris Thompson There isn’t much you can do, outside of...

In front of the courthouse, it is marked red. Who can park there? I thought that was for fire, but I see police cars in the red. I know they have a place in the back to park, but I notice they park out in front and go inside. What is the law? — John Bassett Beside the red curb on the southwest corner of Truxtun Avenue and L Street, signs read “no parking, Bakersfield police only.” The fine for parking there is $35, said Detective Greg Terry.

Q: Who sells organic meat? — Barbara Funk You can find organic chicken at Trader Joe’s, Green Frog Market and Vons. But if there’s a supermarket or butcher in Bakersfield that sells beef that’s certified organic, we couldn’t find it. We called at least 10 places in town and came up empty. Your closest bet may be Fresno, which has a Whole Foods Market that sells organic beef, pork and chicken. You can find the store at 650 W. Shaw Ave. Bring a cooler to transport your purchases...

Q: I was curious if you could find out if the city of Bakersfield is planning on making an interchange at Highway 99 and Hosking Road. The city is starting to grow rapidly in the southern area of town and making Highway 99 accessible for residents from Hosking Road would save time and cut down on traffic. — Robert Castle An interchange is scheduled to go in at that location, said Jacques La Rochelle, the assistant public works director for the city. The time frame for construction is...

Q: Why are there peacocks in Hart Park? Who cares for these animals? — Teri Madewell No one is quite sure who brought the peacocks to Hart Park, but Bob Lerude, Kern County director of parks and recreation, said they have been there at least since the 1950s, if not before. Currently, there are close to 30 peacocks in the park and they are fed by park patrons as well as the Cat People. Park employees are instructed not to feed any of the animals.

Q: I have heard that Wal-Mart has purchased the land on the corner of Renfro and Rosedale to build a new Supercenter. Is this true? — Steven Debuskey Spokesman Roderick Scott said Wal-Mart doesn’t own any land in that area. Scott said pending litigation on sites for proposed Wal-Mart supercenters near Panama Lane and Highway 99 and Gosford and Pacheco roads has halted any Bakersfield-area expansion plans for the time being. He said there are also no current plans to add a Sam’s...

Q: What’s the strange building being built off Akers and White Lane? It’s south of Akers between Planz and White Lane. — Alta Shelton It’s a mosque, and construction is expected to be finished in late December. It’s being built for Shiite Muslims who are in the Dawoodi Bohra sect. The mosque doesn’t have a name yet. Its architecture integrates the Fatemi style, which is popular in Cairo. There will be an area for dining, a library, and offices for administrative staff and...

Q: Coming back from Santa Barbara the other day, as we began the ascent on the Grapevine on Interstate 5, I drove in my favorite lane, the second from the left. Suddenly, I was cut off by a gigantic truck that was passing two other trucks (in the two lanes to his right). The left lane was full and moving fast and I had no choice except to slam on my brakes, hoping the car behind me didn’t rear-end us. Isn’t it against the law for truckers to use any lane other than the right-hand lane...

Q: Who decided on the 36-minute parking limit in some parking spaces downtown? Why 36 minutes and not 30 or 45? It always makes me laugh when I see the signs. Thanks! — Andrea Medina According to Detective Greg Terry, public information officer for the Bakersfield Police Department, the time limit of 36 minutes for some street parking spaces downtown was apparently decided based on a sociological study that took place a few years ago. The shopping habits of consumers and the average...
