Question: In today's (Nov. 7) issue of The Californian you talked about "meeting minutes," yet you did not clarify what that is. Would you mind explaining what "minutes" are for those of us who are not part of corporations or companies that do this? Thank you. — Gustavo Medina Answer: “Minutes” are the official, legal record of actions that took place at a meeting of a private company’s controlling board or of a public agency’s elected...

Question: In the July 14 issue of The Californian, you published an article titled “Smart sprinklers halt water waste.” The article touted the use of lawn sprinkler controllers that make use of ground moisture sensors to determine when it was necessary to water. This is all well and good, but when trying to find such sensors (and controllers), I was unable to find anything meant for residential use other than a possible product produced by RainBird. The other sensors found were...

Editor's note: In an answer that published Oct. 16 we said we couldn't find anywhere in town that sells organic beef. Actually, Lassen's Natural Foods & Vitamins on California Avenue sells organic beef and chicken and will carry organic turkeys on special order for the holidays.

QUESTION: Do you know why the main entrance (between Starbucks and Tahoe Joe’s) off of Ming into Marketplace is closed off every weekend? There seems to be no logic to its closure, and it forces unnecessary congestion at the front entrance, and closes off natural flow of traffic at the theater end. We’ve asked several people, and no one seems to understand the logic or reason for its closure. Thanks. - John P. McAhren ANSWER Joanne Doerter, the property manager of...

Question: What will Congressman Bill Thomas receive in his retirement benefits? Monthly pension? Medical benefits? What will Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger receive in his retirement benefits? Monthly pension? Medical benefits? Will Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy receive any retirement from the state? What will be in Sen. Roy Ashburn’s retirement benefits? Did these elected officials pay into their retirement plans? And what amount came out of...

Q: Do you know what they are building beside Home Depot across from Walgreens on Gosford Road? — Armando Domingo A: The empty lot south of the railroad tracks on Pacheco Road used to be a nursery, according to Jim Eggert, principal planner with the city of Bakersfield. Grading work that’s being done might be to make the land more attractive to buyers. It’s zoned for limited commercial uses such as office and small retail space. Castle & Cooke owns the narrow...

Q: I live in the South San Lauren development off of Fruitvale Avenue and Hageman Road. There has been construction work going on along the canal behind our development with huge piping that looks like sewer lines. However, we have sewer in this and surrounding developments. Can you tell us what is happening with this pipeline? — Edward Rummans A: The piping you see is part of a transmission line that will bring treated surface water to California Water Service customers in...
